Preity Zinta lashes out at 'umpiring standards' in IPL 2025 following Punjab's latest defeat
Punjab Kings suffered a huge blow to their chances of qualifying in the Top 2 for the IPL 2025 playoffs. The side, led by Shreyas Iyer, qualified for the playoffs for the first time in 11 years. However, for PBKS to aim at their maiden IPL title win, a cushion of getting two chances in the playoffs would be significantly favorable. However, Delhi Capitals, already eliminated from the season, spoiled the party for Punjab in Jaipur on Saturday. The qualifiers lost the PBKS vs DC IPL 2025 match by 6 wickets, falling into a muddle with RCB, PBKS, and GT to claim a Top 2 finish. Meanwhile, a controversial call in the match has left Preity Zinta, the beloved Punjab Kings owner, fuming.
Punjab Kings owner Preity Zinta fumes over contentious decision in the PBKS vs DC IPL 2025 match
Preity Zinta raised concerns over the standard of umpiring in IPL 2025 following a controversial call that went against her team in the PBKS vs DC match. The incident unfolded in the 15th over of the first innings when Shashank Singh smashed the final delivery, bowled by Mohit Sharma, toward long-on. Positioned at the boundary, Karun Nair made a valiant effort to keep the ball in play, reaching out to flick it back just as it appeared destined to cross the rope for six. In the process, Nair suspected he might have made contact with the boundary cushion while in possession of the ball and promptly signaled for six himself.
“In a such a high profile tournament with so much technology at the Third Umpire’s disposal such mistakes are unacceptable & simply shouldn’t happen. I spoke To Karun after the game & he confirmed it was DEFINITELY a 6 ! I rest my case ! #PBKSvsDC #IPL2025,” wrote Zinta on her X account.
To resolve the uncertainty, the decision was sent upstairs to third umpire Chris Gaffaney. However, due to a lack of conclusive visual evidence, the six was not awarded. Instead, Punjab Kings were given just a single run, much to their dismay. Preity Zinta later voiced her frustration on X, criticizing the decision and questioning how such an oversight could occur despite the extensive technological tools available to the third umpire.

She also revealed that Karun Nair himself admitted post-match that it was indeed a six, further validating the team’s grievance. Eventually, PBKS lost the match as DC chased down the 207-run target in the final over. The narrow loss dealt a significant blow to Punjab’s campaign. A win would have propelled them to the top of the table, but they now find themselves in second place with 17 points from 13 matches. As they prepare for their final fixture against Mumbai Indians before IPL 2025 playoffs, PBKS will be determined to secure victory and lock in a Top 2 finish, which would give them two shots at making the IPL 2025 final.
