MI seal the final spot in IPL 2025 playoffs with a commanding victory over DC
It seems only fitting for a five-time champion to enter the playoffs in yet another season with a comprehensive victory. At the start of IPL 2025, Mumbai Indians looked fated to repeat their disappointing performances from the last few seasons. However, a winning streak of six matches that came at just the right moment has now propelled MI into their 11th playoffs in IPL history. Meanwhile, Delhi Capitals, who started out as one of the strongest contenders for a favorable finish this season, fell victim to a downward trend, strikingly in contrast with MI's run. Playing without their skipper, the Capitals endured a 59-run defeat in the MI vs DC IPL 2025 match, as Mumbai claimed the final spot in the IPL 2025 playoffs.

The MI vs DC match at Wankhede Stadium was the last opportunity for Delhi Capitals to stay in the race for IPL 2025 playoffs qualification. Ahead of the all-important clash, a yellow alert was issued in Mumbai with the forecast of a heavy downpour. A washout was the top concern for both teams as they headed to the venue. However, with what followed in the fixture, Delhi Capitals might have fared better if only the cloud cover in Mumbai had hampered the match. Mumbai Indians would still have sustained a chance at qualification even if DC had managed a win. However, Delhi Capitals had only this one chance to make it count, which, unfortunately, the team fumbled on the tricky surface at MI's home.
DC rattled MI early in the powerplay, spinners maintained the momentum in middle-overs
Dashing the concerns of the fans and the teams, rain didn’t interfere with the MI vs DC IPL 2025 match at all. The toss was completed on time, and the match started as scheduled. However, right from the start, Delhi Capitals appeared out of balance. Team captain Axar Patel sat out due to illness. Moreover, KL Rahul didn’t take his usual spot in the DC Playing XI, being named in the impact subs list as the team opted to field first against MI. Faf du Plessis held the reins of DC as the action kicked off at Wankhede.
The Capitals started out positively as the MI batters struggled with the sluggish pitch at home. Rohit Sharma was sent back cheaply by Mustafizur Rahman in the powerplay. However, Ryan Rickelton counter-attacked with big hits. The attack remained constrained as Mukesh Kumar joined the powerplay to dismiss Will Jacks. From there, DC introduced Kuldeep Yadav and Vipraj Nigam, who reaped the benefits of a gripping surface. Tilak Varma and Suryakumar Yadav settled in, but the spin duo kept things tight as runs became difficult to find.
Suryakumar Yadav, Naman Dhir fired at the death to take the total to 180
Shackled by the spinners, Tilak Varma eventually succumbed to the mounting pressure, departing for 27 off 27. Suryakumar Yadav stayed put despite losing Hardik Pandya cheaply at the other end. The tide finally turned at the death as Naman Dhir took the onus. The 19th over by Mukesh Kumar went for 17 runs as Dhir took charge against the pacer. Bowling well until then, Chameera fell victim to the wrath of Suryakumar Yadav, who hit two sixes and as many fours to push the MI total to the par score of 180.
DC crumbled under the lethal attack of MI as the home team dominated Wankhede
The pitch that troubled the home batters proved especially threatening to the visitors. With SKY leading the way, MI managed to tackle both the DC attack and the nature of the pitch. However, DC batters couldn’t replicate the same against the likes of Deepak Chahar, Trent Boult, and later Jasprit Bumrah. Faf du Plessis fell to Deepak Chahar before KL Rahul, the carrier of DC’s hope, walked back for 11 off 6 against Trent Boult. Abishek Porel couldn’t take on the responsibility of stabilising the order, falling as the third powerplay wicket after Will Jacks opened his account.
Meanwhile, Mitchell Santner dominated the middle overs, as any fightback from DC was duly curbed by the spinner. Playing the pitch to his advantage, Santner trapped the set batters, Vipraj Nigam and Sameer Rizvi, to push DC further out of the game. The last remaining fightback was also dashed when the spinner returned to dismiss Ashutosh Sharma. From there, Jasprit Bumrah took the onus to secure MI’s qualification. The speedster removed Tristan Stubbs as the game shifted from a question of ‘if’ to ‘when.’ Karn Sharma claimed one, and Bumrah picked up three as Mumbai Indians won the MI vs DC IPL 2025 match by 59 runs.

An 'E' was quickly etched against Delhi Capitals on the IPL 2025 table as the team joined the eliminated batch. Meanwhile, MI claimed the last remaining spot in the IPL 2025 playoffs. The curtains fell at Wankhede after the home team treated the crowd to the desired conclusion of the campaign in Mumbai. Now, the contest essentially remains among Gujarat Titans, Punjab Kings, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, and Mumbai Indians for the IPL 2025 title.
