Trent Alexander-Arnold explains his decision to change the name on Real Madrid jersey
Real Madrid's new signing, Trent Alexander-Arnold has defended his decision to change the name on the back of his shirt ahead of the FIFA Club World Cup. For the 2025-26 campaign, the player has opted to use "Trent" on his shirt, moving away from the full name he used at Liverpool. He explained that the decision was made because, in Spain, double-barrelled names are common, and he felt using his first name would simplify things.
Speaking to the media, the former Liverpool man revealed that during his travels across Europe, he often found himself in confusing situations due to his three names. This was the reason behind his decision to have "Trent" on the back of his shirt. He said:
I’ve always found when I travel to Europe that the whole name situation confuses a lot of people, as there being three names and double-barreled
Continuing with his decision, Trent Alexander-Arnold shared how his name has been called out across Europe. He expressed his desire to make it easier for fans and broadcasters alike. The player will also wear the number 12 jersey, once worn by the legendary full-back Marcelo. The right-back said
People call me Arnold, people call me Alexander, people call me Alex, people call me Trent, there’s a lot that goes on. So I thought let’s make it easy, Trent on the back, and be known as Trent. That’s my name so I guess that’s what people will call me

After securing his transfer to Real Madrid, the English full-back expressed his excitement about joining the club. While acknowledging that everyone admires the legendary club, he emphasized that Los Blancos deserve respect for their trophy-laden history. He also mentioned that he has always admired clubs that win trophies.
But I am very excited be here. Whether you support the club or not, you have to respect the trophies that the club win. No matter what, that has been always there for me. I have always admired players and clubs that win trophies.”
