Speaking to the media, Pep Guardiola mentioned that he was surprised by the way the winger conducted himself professionally against Inter Milan in the semifinals of the UEFA Champions League. Though the club did not finish it on a winning note, Yamal orchestrated the midfield and always took the Azzuris by surprise. He also mentioned that the player has the potential to reach the heights of Lionel Messi, who also started on the flanks before he became the station. Pep Guairdola said:
