“I was a bit confused” - Cole Palmer reacts to Donald Trump joining Chelsea’s Club World Cup trophy Celebration
In the first-ever edition of the FIFA Club World Cup hosted in the United States, Chelsea FC stunned current European champions Paris Saint-Germain in a dominating 3-0 victory at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. Enzo Maresca’s team played brilliantly and completely controlled the match, especially in the first half, where they outplayed Luis Enrique’s side with sharp and accurate play.
A brace by Cole Palmer, followed by a goal from Chelsea’s new arrival Joao Pedro, completely stunned PSG’s defence, and they had no answer to it. This excellent performance provided the second trophy of the season for The Blues, after winning the UEFA Conference League against Real Betis. After the match, a moment went viral on social media where Chelsea’s top performer, Cole Palmer seemed clueless after US President Donald Trump, along with FIFA President Gianni Infantino, presented the Club World Cup Trophy to captain Reece James and stayed on the stage, where the team was celebrating.
When Donald Trump joined the stage, the whole team was seen confused and Palmer’s reaction was caught on camera and went viral on the internet.
Reacting to the same, Cole Palmer said,
“To be honest, it was quite loud. I couldn't hear too much. He just congratulated me and the team for lifting the trophy and told us to enjoy the moment. I knew he was going to be here but I didn't know he was going to be on the stand when we lifted the trophy. I was a bit confused, yes.”
"I thought that he was going to exit the stage"- Chelsea captain on Donaldo Trump
What was meant to be a brief appearance by Donaldo Trump turned into a more extended presence, catching the Chelsea players by surprise. Chelsea captain Reece James stated,
“They told me that he was going to present the trophy and then exit the stage. I thought that he was going to exit the stage, but he wanted to stay.”
The inaugural FIFA Club World Cup champions will now take a well-deserved break before playing again next month. They will have a few friendly matches against Bayer Leverkusen and AC Milan before officially starting the 2025-26 season on August 17 with their first match against Crystal Palace.
