After a successful 2024/25 season, the Barcelona players have returned to their homes, with the club not participating in the FIFA Club World Cup. During the off-season break before pre-season preparations begin, both the club and several players are assessing options for potential transfers or contract renewals. With the contract extension talks happening, Frenkie de Jong has opened up on his contract renewal with Catalans.
Speaking to the media, Frenkie de Jong mentioned that he is going to renew the contract with the club if the offer is presented. While he is not 100% sure about the new contract in the summer, he hopes for it to happen. He said:
I think I’m going to renew with Barça
I can’t be 100% sure, but if everything goes well, it will happen. My intention is to renew this summer, but we’ll see what happens. It’s a negotiation and we can’t say when. The important thing is that both parties want it, and I think we’ll reach an agreement
He joined the Spanish outfit in a deal worth €86 million in the summer of 2019 shortly after Ajax stunned the footballing world. However, his career at Barcelona has consistently been marred with injuries. He has missed over 360 days during his six-year stint at the club due to various setbacks. De Jong mentioned that a long injury has always derailed his progress at the club but the titles and victories have provided fans with the visibility and impact of his performances. He mentioned:
I had a long injury and suffered a lot with my ankle, it was difficult but I’m fine now. But before the injury I was playing very well. I don’t think I’ve done much better this year than in previous years, but the titles we’ve won and the victories have given more visibility to my game
