In the current age of football where players are stretching their careers by playing in Major League Soccer and in the Middle East, a former Chelsea wonderkid has decided to hang up his boots. Charly Musonda, a former Chelsea wonderkid, has retired at the age of 28. Following his retirement, he penned an emotional note for his fans and friends. Rising through Chelsea’s academy, Charly Musonda was one of the brightest talents to come out of Cobham in the 2010s.

On his senior debut, Charly Musonda scored against Nottingham Forest in the Carabao Cup fixture. He was touted as the next Eden Hazard, but a series of recurring knee injuries after a loan move to Vitesse derailed a generational footballer’s career. In a podcast, Charly Musonda opened up about his career, rise at Cobham, and the injuries that affected four years of his playing time. He also spoke about the mental issues that he battled and his decision to retire from the game. He said:

I'm announcing I’m going to retire from professional football,”

“It’s a decision I’ve been wrestling with for a long time. It’s not an easy decision, but again, I want to live my life with purpose and I want to help players.

In his post, Charly Musonda said that while he was stepping away from 11-a-side football, he would not be leaving the game he always loved. He also stated that this is not a goodbye but a new beginning.
