Virat Kohli, India’s second-highest run-scorer in ODI history, is set to play under the captaincy of Shubman Gill for the first time during the upcoming three-match series against Australia. This marks a significant moment as Kohli, with 14,181 runs in 302 ODIs, is just 54 runs away from surpassing Sri Lankan legend Kumar Sangakkara, who ended his career with 14,234 runs in 404 matches. Achieving this milestone would place Kohli second on the all-time ODI run-scorers list, behind only the legendary Sachin Tendulkar, famously known as the ‘God of Cricket’.
This series also marks a new chapter for Indian cricket, with Shubman Gill taking over as ODI captain from Rohit Sharma. Having already led India in Test cricket, Gill guided the team to a 2-2 draw against England and a 2-0 series win over the West Indies. His leadership has seen India rise to third place in the ongoing World Test Championship (WTC) 2025–27 points table. The Australian tour presents Gill with his first opportunity to lead India in ODIs, a key step in his leadership journey.
