Kolkata Knight Riders’ spinner Varun Chakravarthy is a sight to behold when he is in rhythm and bowling with complete control. The Indian spinner has made a remarkable return in white-ball cricket and is now an integral part of India’s white-ball setup. He was axed from India’s team after a dismal outing in the 2021 T20 World Cup and couldn’t make a comeback for three years. However, the appointment of Gautam Gambhir as head coach saw Varun Chakrvarthy making a return to India’s white-ball set-up. He put in a dominant performance in the ICC Champions Trophy and is making heads turn with his bowling exploits in T20Is.

Recently, in a conversation with RevSports, Chakravarthy credited both Gambhir and India’s T20I skipper Suryakumar Yadav for his return to the Indian team. The Indian spinner lauded the duo for playing a crucial role in his comeback.

"Yes, Surya (Kumar Yadav) and Gautam (Gambhir), they have played big roles in my comeback because they wanted me. Surya told me before the Bangladesh tour that “I’m looking at you, let’s see how the other things go, but I’m keen on having you in the team set-up." Varun said.

“Similarly, Gauti Bhai also has helped me a lot in my comeback, the way he motivates me. Even if we talk little, he has always given me good confidence and he’s always told me that “no matter who’s going to ignore you, I will keep you in my plans for now.” So, that kind of gave me confidence,” he added.

Varun Chakravarthy has picked 31 wickets in his last 12 innings

Varun Chakravarthy has been a revelation with the ball since making his T20I comeback. He has been India’s highest wicket-taker in all of the last three T20I series. Chakrvarthy picked 14 wickets in five T20Is in India’s last T20I series against England. Prior to that, India played a five-match T20I series in South Africa. Varun starred with the ball, claiming 14 wickets in four Tests at 11.50. Varun Chakravarthy also topped the wickets tally in the T20I series vs Bangladesh, claiming five wickets in three innings at 14.60.

He is likely to be added to India’s squad for the Asia Cup 2025, scheduled to be held in the UAE.
