Mumbai Indians knocked Rajasthan Royals out of the race for IPL 2025 playoff qualification by securing a 100-run win at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in the 50th match on Thursday. Hardik Pandya and Co. produced a clinical performance with the bat and ball, reminding everyone of their dominance in the Indian Premier League. With that win, the five-time champions have jumped to the number one spot on the points table, collecting 14 points in 11 games. After making a dull start, Hardik Pandya and Co. have made a remarkable comeback in the tournament and are looking on course to secure their playoff qualification.

Riding on outstanding batting from the top four, Mumbai Indians posted a mammoth 217-run total in the first innings. The pacers then wreaked havoc with the ball in the powerplay and bundled out Rajasthan Royals for just 117 runs.

Here’s a look at three talking points from RR vs MI IPL 2025 game:

  1. MI’s top four continue to shine!

Runs keep coming from MI’s top four with the openers finding form at the right time. Consistent performances from the top order have inspired MI’s comeback this season. Rohit Sharma and Ryan Rickleton laid the foundation today against RR with a 116-run opening partnership. Both took their time initially before shifting gears after the third over. Ryan. Rickelton played another top knock of 61 off 38, while Rohit Sharma brought up his third fifty in IPL 2025. He departed after playing a handy knock of 53 off 36 balls.

Will Jacks was demoted today as Suryakumar Yadav and Hardik Pandya came at third and fourth spots, respectively. The openers set it up perfectly for the duo to capitalize and they made the most of it. Both Hardik and Suryakumar paced their innings beautifully, ensuring that MI kept scoring at a rate of 10 runs an over. A 94-run partnership for the third wicket between Hardik Pandya (48 off 23) and Suryakumar Yadav (48 off 24) propelled Mumbai Indians to a mammoth score of 217 runs in the first innings.

2.Mumbai reinforce their status as the best bowling unit in IPL 2025

Rajasthan Royals came into the game with oodles of confidence, having chased down a 210-run target in their last game against GT. However, the challenge was different, this time around. The new ball was swinging and it was coming on faster than one would expect. Mumbai's pace attack produced a sensational display of bowling in the powerplay and sent half of Rajasthan’s team back to the hut.

Deepak Chahar had Vaibhav Suryavanshi mistime one to mid-on in the first over of the innings. In the second over, Trent Boult was smashed for two sixes off Jaiswal before he castled his stumps. In his next over, he also sent Nitish Rana back to the hut after being smashed for three fours.

Bumrah was introduced in the fifth over and the Indian pacer surprised Riyan Parag with his pace and bounce. The RR got a top edge and Rohit Sharma took an easy catch. Bumrah also got Hetmyer on the very next ball with a bouncer to leave Rajasthan Royals tottering at 51 runs for five in just five overs. Wickets continued to fall after the powerplay and Rajasthan Royals were eventually folded. 117.

3. Rajasthan Royals are officially knocked out

Following a 100-run defeat against MI at Sawai Mansingh Stadium on Thursday, the Rajasthan Royals became the second team after CSK to be eliminated from the IPL 2025 playoff qualification race.

The absence of RR’s regular skipper Sanju Samson and the release of players like Jos Buttler and Yuzvendra Chahal has made a significant impact on their performance. The batting looked toothless, while the bowling was short on match-winners apart from Jofra Archer. Rajasthan Royals have only secured three wins in 11 matches, and the defeat against MI has shown them the exit door from the playoff race.
