While there is a long wait before the IPL returns for its 19th edition, trade buzz has already taken over the headlines. Big names like Ravi Ashwin, KL Rahul, and Ishan Kishan are reported to be among the players who could change teams ahead of IPL 2026. The most significant development, however, is unfolding in the Rajasthan Royals camp. The latest reports from the franchise indicate that their captain, Sanju Samson, has asked to be released ahead of IPL 2026. Now, as the possibility of a trade or release brews behind the scenes, the wicketkeeper-batsman has opened up about the crucial role Rajasthan and Rahul Dravid have played in his sporting career.

"RR has meant the world to me," says Sanju Samson amid trade rumors

The buzz around Samson's possible exit from Rajasthan Royals is not a one-dimensional discussion. The homecoming of Rahul Dravid to the camp and the rise of Vaibhav Suryavanshi as an explosive opener, every element seems to have played a role in pushing Samson to the edge. Some moments during IPL 2025, when RR suffered humiliating defeats and Samson sat on the bench with an injury, fueled speculation of a rift between the captain and head coach Dravid.

Meanwhile, with the Royals seemingly having found a dynamic opener in the young Suryavanshi and a potential next captain in homegrown talent Riyan Parag, much like Samson himself once was, Samson appears to have sensed his importance fading. The recent buzz around Rajasthan Royals is that Sanju Samson has demanded a release, contradicting earlier reports that hinted at the franchise’s interest in keeping their captain in the squad.

Moreover, with Chennai Super Kings reportedly searching for a long-term, reliable wicketkeeper-batsman, the possibility of a trade between the teams remains open. However, amid the sensational chatter emerging from various camps ahead of IPL 2026, Samson recently spoke highly of his team and of Rahul Dravid.

The Rajasthan Royals’ skipper reflected on his enduring journey with the franchise, acknowledging the trust they placed in him during the early years of his career. He also spoke warmly of his bond with the team, extending heartfelt thanks to Rahul Dravid and co-owner Manoj Badale for offering him the break that set his path in motion.

"RR has meant the world to me. A small child coming from a village in Kerala, wanting to show his talent. And then Rahul (Dravid) sir and Manoj Badale sir gave me a stage to get up and show the world what I am made of,” Samson said. "That time, they trusted me throughout. The journey with RR has been really great, and I’m very grateful to have been in a franchise like that. It really means a lot to me," he added.
