Ashwin’s road to the Indian cricket team was paved by his IPL stint with Chennai Super Kings. The spin all-rounder went on to become one of India’s highest wicket-takers in the longer format. Meanwhile, in the IPL, Ravi Ashwin played for multiple teams, including Delhi Capitals and Rajasthan Royals. However, when CSK bid for the veteran spinner in the IPL 2025 mega auction, it felt like his journey had come full circle. Ashwin’s homecoming to Chennai coincided with the conclusion of his international career, as he announced his retirement during the Border Gavaskar Trophy last year.

Ravi Ashwin seeks a release from CSK ahead of IPL 2026

The return of Ravi Ashwin to the Yellow Den was one of the most talked-about aspects ahead of IPL 2025. However, the homecoming did not pan out as anticipated, with both Chennai Super Kings and Ashwin struggling during the season. Now, latest reports have suggested that the veteran spinner has chosen to part ways with the five-time champions. The 38-year-old struggled throughout IPL 2025, claiming only seven wickets across nine matches. Although CSK invested INR 9.75 crore to secure him in the mega auction, Ashwin was unable to meet expectations.

The latest reports indicate that Ashwin has already communicated his decision to exit the franchise, though the exact reasons behind this move remain unclear. Moreover, alongside his playing role, Ashwin has served as the Director of Operations at the CSK Academy for the past year. Now, as he seeks exits from CSK, the spinner is likely to relinquish to relinquish his position at the academy as well.

Meanwhile, it is yet to be confirmed whether he will be traded to another franchise or enter the IPL 2026 mini auction slated for later this year. Ashwin’s performance in IPL 2025 fell short of expectations, with his lackluster bowling figures contributing to his being benched in several matches. Though often used during the powerplay, he conceded too many runs, allowing opponents to gain an advantage.

The report further mentioned that after a disappointing run last season, the top brass at CSK held a meeting to prepare the roadmap for the upcoming edition. MS Dhoni and Ruturaj Gaikwad attended the meeting to strategize the next steps. While MS Dhoni has not confirmed his return to the tournament, the former CSK captain, in a recent interaction, reiterated his commitment to the Super Kings.

Moreover, there’s a trade brewing, with Sanju Samson also seeking an exit from Rajasthan Royals and CSK on the lookout for a wicketkeeper-batter prospect. Earlier updates indicated that CSK was interested in onboarding Sanju Samson, but the five-time champions were reluctant to trade one of their own. However, with Ashwin requesting a release, it remains to be seen if the spinner will return to the Royals in a trade deal.
