Before the Ranji Trophy 2025-26 season kicks off, a glimpse of what awaits has been showcased. Maharashtra and Mumbai staged a warm-up ahead of the first-class tournament, which begins on 15 October. The three-day practice match at the MCA in Pune saw Prithvi Shaw, who recently joined Maharashtra, come face-to-face with his ex-team. The batsman hit a statement ton, forging a massive 305-run partnership with Arshin Kulkarni. However, what dominated the headlines following the day’s play was Prithvi Shaw fight with his former teammate, Musheer Khan.

Prithvi Shaw issued a reminder to the national selectors with a blistering knock of 181 runs for Maharashtra against his former team Mumbai in a three-day practice encounter, held ahead of the Ranji Trophy 2025-26 season. Shaw’s innings came off just 140 deliveries, featuring a mammoth 305-run stand alongside Arshin Kulkarni. However, his impressive outing took a dramatic turn when his dismissal led to an intense altercation with ex-teammate Musheer Khan, prompting the on-field umpire to step in.

The right-hander fell agonizingly short of what could have been a sensational double ton, perishing on 181. Shaw was dismissed while attempting a slog sweep off a fuller ball from Musheer, the younger brother of India cricketer Sarfaraz Khan. His shot found the fielder at deep fine leg, and what followed stirred controversy. Viral visuals showed Prithvi Shaw fight with Musheer, visibly angered after being given a send-off by the bowler.

Unable to contain his fury, Shaw appeared to swing his bat in Musheer’s direction, escalating tensions on the field. Updates from the field also suggested that Shaw's innings fared through intense sledging. However, the batter eventually lost his temper after the dismissal, even attempting to grab Musheer's collar. Mumbai players quickly gathered around Musheer as the umpire intervened to separate the two. On his way back to the pavilion, Shaw was seen exchanging heated words with Siddhesh Lad before finally walking off.

Earlier in the innings, the out-of-favour India opener had adopted a measured start against the Shardul Thakur-led attack. Meanwhile, Arshin Kulkarni, his opening partner for Maharashtra, launched an aggressive counter, unsettling the Mumbai bowlers early on. Continuing his rich form from the Buchi Babu Invitational Tournament, Shaw brought up his half-century in 84 balls and looked firmly in control at 76, even as Kulkarni blazed his way to a century in just 95 deliveries.

Kulkarni too narrowly missed a double century, falling for 186 (139), bringing an end to a colossal 305-run opening partnership, one that dominated Mumbai’s bowling throughout the morning session. Coming to Shaw, the batsman sought an NOC to leave Mumbai and join Maharashtra earlier this year. His journey with Mumbai saw him being dropped from the Ranji Trophy squad in the previous season, with multiple MCA representatives citing and lamenting the lack of discipline in Shaw’s conduct.
