Prithvi Shaw set to move out of Mumbai, seeks shelter with another state team
Prithvi Shaw is keen on moving to the next phase of his career. The 25-year-old has asked the Mumbai Cricket Association for a No Objection Certificate. Shaw has claimed that he has received an opportunity from another state team and he looks forward to moving on. The youngster has endured a hard time with Mumbai over the last year, losing his spot in the First-Class squad and List A cricket. Shaw's last appearance for Mumbai was noted at the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, where the team picked the title but Shaw showcased a disappointing run.
Prithvi Shaw, touted as one of the most promising youngsters on his debut in 2017, has slipped out of favour from almost every aspect of his cricketing career. Mumbai, Shaw's home since his debut, dropped the batter from the Ranji Trophy last year. Moreover, Shaw didn't find a place in the squad for the Vijay Hazare Trophy. Expressing his frustration on social media at the time, Shaw quoted his stats, asking if those numbers are not enough for his selection then what else he needs to do.
However, the problem with Shaw runs deeper than just the recent abysmal returns from his bat. Time and again, different stakeholders have expressed their disdain with the youngster's work ethic. In his time with Delhi Capitals at the IPL, Shaw pissed off the head coach Ricky Ponting by consistently missing practice sessions. On the domestic front, several officials from the MCA have reiterated the lack of work put in by Shaw in refining his craft and his commitment to the team.
More recently, Shreyas Iyer, who led MCA to the SMAT victory, also talked about Shaw. The captain explained that no one can babysit Shaw into evolving his work ethic. Consequently, Shaw lost his favour with the state team by the end of the last domestic cycle. Further woes arrived for Shaw when he found no buyers at the IPL 2025 mega auction.
Moreover, despite several teams suffering injury-marred absences, none of the franchises signed Shaw as a replacement. Now, Prithvi Shaw is seeking an NOC from the MCA and is eyeing a potential move to another team. The details about his next team are not clear yet. However, the Mumbai Cricket Association has confirmed the development.
"Yes, Prithvi Shaw has written a letter to us, seeking a No-Objection Certificate. We are just discussing it with the Apex Council members. We will make our decision by today evening," MCA secretary Abhay Hadap confirmed to a daily.
Meanwhile, Shaw expressed gratitude to the MCA for the opportunity. However, the cricketer talked about being at a crucial juncture in his career. The letter by Shaw to the Mumbai board talked about how the new opportunity with another team would aid the growth of the player. Shaw, furthermore, talked about coming to the decision after a lot of deliberation and consideration.
"At this juncture in my career, I have been presented with a promising opportunity to play professional cricket under another State Association, which I believe will further contribute to my growth and development as a cricketer," Shaw wrote in his letter. "In light of this, I kindly request you to issue me a No Objection Certificate (NOC) that will enable me to officially represent the new State Association in the upcoming domestic season," he added.
"Please be assured that this decision has been made after careful consideration, and with utmost respect for the MCA. I remain ever grateful to the association for the guidance and platform provided over the years," he further added.
