The workload management of Jasprit Bumrah in the Indian setup is growing trickier by the day. The pacer has concluded his stretch of the England tour, having played three of the five Tests. The debate around Bumrah's limited availability became a central theme of the India vs England series. After opening the series in Leeds, Bumrah missed the Edgbaston Test before returning to the lineup for the third and fourth Tests at Lord's and Old Trafford, respectively. Now, as the visitors play the fifth and final Test at The Oval, Bumrah has been released from the squad. Meanwhile, a source from the BCCI has opened up about the possibility of the leading pacer featuring in the upcoming Asia Cup 2025.

The Asian Cricket Council recently announced the schedule for the Asia Cup 2025. While India has been designated the official host of the event, the upcoming edition will be played in the UAE due to political tensions in the subcontinent. The ACC tournament has become a point of contention in India. Following the India-Pakistan conflict, triggered by the heinous Pahalgam terror attack, the neighbours have cut off all diplomatic interactions. Nevertheless, the arch-rivals have been placed in the same group for the tournament.

With the possibility of India facing Pakistan as many as three times, calls have been made for the team to pull out of the India vs Pakistan matches. Similar outrage was witnessed over the India vs Pakistan fixtures scheduled in the WCL. Public ire led to the WCL calling off the opener, before India withdrew from the semi-final against Pakistan. Now, while the future of the Asia Cup 2025 remains uncertain, a BCCI source has opened up about the team combination.

While August will be a cricket-free month for India, providing Bumrah with a lengthy break ahead of a packed schedule, there’s still uncertainty over his participation in the Asia Cup. Head coach Gautam Gambhir and chief selector Ajit Agarkar may choose to rest him from the UAE tournament to better manage his workload for the months ahead.

The Asia Cup 2025, scheduled in the T20 format, will run from September 9 to 28. India is set to begin a two-Test home series against the West Indies starting October 2. If India makes it to the Asia Cup final, it would leave Jasprit Bumrah with barely a 48-hour turnaround before the red-ball series, an impractical situation considering his well-documented injury concerns.

“It will be a tricky call, but Bumrah loves Test cricket and there are World Test Championship points at stake. As far as T20 is concerned, he can play the series against New Zealand in January, which will be a dress rehearsal for the T20 World Cup,” the BCCI source said.

“If Bumrah plays Asia Cup and suppose India plays the final, no way can he play against West Indies at Ahmedabad. Obviously, the question arises, do you need Bumrah against West Indies or he plays Asia Cup after a month’s break and plays the two Tests against South Africa. That call, Ajit Agarkar and Gautam Gambhir will have to take," the source added.
