IPL 2027: Suryakumar Yadav set to leave Mumbai Indians? Here’s the reason
It is tough being Suryakumar Yadav at the moment. The man, who led India to the T20 World Cup title just two months ago, has now not only been removed from the captaincy but also dropped from the team. Meanwhile, according to some reports, Suryakumar Yadav might also be parting ways with the Mumbai Indians.
Recently, on June 8, fans noticed significant activity on Suryakumar Yadav's Instagram account; he removed "Mumbai Indians" from his bio and deleted all photos and collaborations related to the franchise. He also unfollowed MI, sparking speculation that he might leave the team.
Suryakumar Yadav has been struggling with poor form for a long time, a slump that persisted through both the T20 World Cup and the IPL. While Team India managed to retain the World Cup despite SKY's poor form, the Mumbai Indians finished in ninth place in IPL 2026.
In IPL 2026, Suryakumar Yadav scored 270 runs across 13 matches at an average of just 20, including a single half-century. However, Surya has a long-standing association with the Mumbai Indians. After making his debut with MI in 2012, he joined KKR in 2013 and played there for five years. He returned to his "home" team in 2018 and has remained with MI ever since. If Suryakumar Yadav does indeed leave MI, KKR—who are currently on the lookout for a captain—might consider adding him to their squad.
Mumbai Indians could be looking at a fresh start next season. Reports suggest that Hardik Pandya might also leave MI, and the team is now searching for a new captain—a responsibility that will fall upon former captain Rohit Sharma. It remains to be seen which player the MI management entrusts with the future leadership of the team.
During a recent T20 league match, Suryakumar Yadav congratulated Shreyas Iyer on becoming the new T20I captain and also shared a post regarding the new team. It remains to be seen whether Suryakumar Yadav will succeed in making a comeback to the T20I team or announce his retirement. It will also be interesting to observe whether Surya stays with MI or joins a new team. However, there has been no official statement on this matter from either Surya or MI so far.
