Shreyas Iyer reveals the blueprint for T20Is after becoming India captain
Shreyas Iyer has been officially appointed as the new captain of India’s T20I team. Having been a regular member of the white-ball squad for a long time and having proven his leadership mettle in the IPL and domestic cricket, there had been persistent calls for him to take over the captaincy. Ultimately, his consistently stellar performances were rewarded with his appointment as the new T20I captain. Under his leadership, Team India will begin its T20I campaign later this month with the tour of Ireland. The BCCI has announced the squads for the upcoming Ireland and England tours, as well as the 2026 Asian Games, under his captaincy. Now, everyone is eager to see the T20I team's performance under his leadership.
Speaking at an event in Mumbai, the middle-order batter acknowledged that he is fully prepared for the challenges of captaincy, while also making it clear that he no longer wishes to remain in anyone's shadow.
"I've got this job right now of or responsibility as a captain, it's a great challenge. At the same time, I don't have to change my personality. I have to be the same person how I was before and not try to be someone else or be under someone's shadow," Shreyas said during the launch of Kabuni, an AI-driven sports-tech tool, on Sunday.
Under Shreyas Iyer’s captaincy, Kolkata Knight Riders won the IPL 2024 title. While Delhi Capitals and Punjab Kings also reached to the finals under his guidance in 2020 & 2025, respectively. Shreyas didn't get sufficient credit for the team's success as he likely deserved when KKR won the IPL 2024 championship. Although the management and supporters acknowledged his participation, Gautam Gambhir, the team's mentor, was credited as the true brain behind the victory. Now, the duo of Gautam Gambhir and Shreyas Iyer will be seen together once again, which has significantly heightened the excitement among fans.
Shreyas Iyer last played a T20I in December 2023. He got a T20I call-up against New Zealand earlier from the ICC T20 World Cup 2026, but he didn’t get a chance to play in the India playing XI. He was not even part of the Asia Cup 2025 & T20 World Cup 2026. But he consistently played T20 matches in the domestic circuit and IPL as well, where he performed excellently.
