The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has recently introduced a new system within the Indian Premier League (IPL), under which players will not be permitted to travel to different cities or stay in the same hotel as their partners during the course of the league. According to a report, this rule was implemented after a player's girlfriend was allegedly observed leaking team-related information to outsiders.

A BCCI source revealed that the Board had been keeping a close watch on certain players and team officials who were making contact with outsiders at unauthorised locations—outside of designated areas—and were sharing internal information. Fearing that this posed a growing threat to the integrity and reputation of the league, the BCCI decided to enforce this regulation. The report further suggests that the team owner was also involved in the specific incident where a girlfriend disseminated team information to the outside world; subsequently, the owner sought immediate assistance from the BCCI regarding the matter, prompting the Board to take swift action and introduce this new rule.

"This time, we have observed various anomalies and irregularities in the conduct of certain franchises and players. So BCCI and IPL are preparing an advisory, and we are going to release that advisory this evening because we have noticed that there are a lot of unauthorised persons who are moving along with the team members," BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia had said.

"And some people who are unauthorised are coming to the hotels and to the players' rooms or the team officials' room, which is totally against our anti-corruption protocols. We have also seen that certain team owners and officials are mingling with players in areas where it is not allowed. So there are certain protocols we have to follow, and we have seen there are some dilutions.

"We have taken this very seriously. We are issuing an advisory, and it will be very strictly followed. If there is any violation hereinafter, then BCCI and IPL will take very stringent action," Saikia explained further.

For quite some time now, reports have been circulating that the BCCI, in an effort to uphold discipline, would implement regulations in the IPL similar to those currently in place for the Indian national team in international cricket. It is even anticipated that the BCCI may soon announce significant new guidelines specifically addressing the "girlfriend culture" within the league.

The excitement surrounding IPL 2026 has currently gripped the entire nation, with star players showcasing their skills across various franchises. Throughout the league, seasoned veterans—such as Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli—are competing with a pool of young talents, including Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, Prince Yadav, and Mukul Chowdhary, thereby adding immense lustre to the tournament.
