Major changes are on the horizon for the Indian T20I team. According to reports, Shreyas Iyer could become the new captain of India's T20I squad, while Suryakumar Yadav may be sacked from the leadership duties. Reports suggest that the BCCI is not pleased with Suryakumar Yadav's current form; he has been struggling for consistency for quite some time, and his poor run has continued into the IPL as well. Given this situation, the board is considering entrusting the captaincy to a player capable of steering the team in a new direction from this point forward.

Currently, Shreyas Iyer is leading the race for this role. Iyer is a senior member of Team India and also serves as the vice-captain of the ODI squad. This clearly implies that Iyer is not only poised to make a comeback to the T20I setup but is also likely to be handed the reins of the team.

Apart from Shreyas Iyer, Hardik Pandya is also a contender for the leadership duties. Earlier, it was believed that after Rohit Sharma retired from the T20 format, Hardik Pandya would take command of the T20I team, but the management handed over the command to Surya. But now, once again, the management may consider handing over the command of the T20I team to Pandya.

Indian players are currently occupied with the IPL, while Shreyas Iyer's team, the Punjab Kings, sits atop the points table. Suryakumar Yadav, on the other hand, is still searching for his form. Under his captaincy, India recently created history by winning the 2026 T20 World Cup title. However, during the World Cup, Surya's bat remained notably silent. He scored 242 runs in 9 innings, including his highest cricket score of the tournament, 89 against the USA. After this, he failed again and again throughout the tournament. Since he became the regular skipper of the T20I setup, he has amassed 932 runs in 45 matches.

Following the IPL, the Indian team is scheduled to play a two-match T20I series during a tour of Ireland, followed by a five-match T20I series during a tour of England. Subsequently, the Indian team will travel to Zimbabwe for a tour comprising three T20Is. In October, the West Indies are set to visit India to play both ODI and T20I series. Additionally, India is scheduled to host a T20I series against Sri Lanka. In 2028, the Indian team is set to defend its World Cup title in Australia and New Zealand; meanwhile, Team India will also have its sights set on the gold medal at the LA Olympics. However, the 35-year-old cricketer still wants to lead the team, but selectors are not convinced by his current scores.

According to a report, Suryakumar Yadav has been battling a wrist injury for quite some time; despite this, he continues to play—a situation that has taken a toll on his batting performance. In the 2026 IPL as well, Surya is struggling with poor form, and his slump is a major contributing factor to the Mumbai Indians' dismal performance. So far in the tournament, he has failed to play a single match-winning innings. Across 10 matches, he has scored a mere 195 runs at an average of 19.5, a tally that includes one half-century.

On a personal front, however, there is good news for Suryakumar Yadav: he has recently become a father. His wife, Devisha Shetty, has given birth to a baby girl. He is currently with his family and may miss the upcoming IPL 2026 match against Royal Challengers Bengaluru scheduled for May 10th.
