IPL 2025: Shubman Gill rues dropped chances following GT's elimination
Gujarat Titans ended up on the wrong side of a thrilling showdown in Mullanpur on Friday. The IPL 2022 champions faced Mumbai Indians in the IPL 2025 Eliminator after finishing third on the points table following the group stage. While the Titans put up a fight in the mammoth chase of 229, Shubman Gill and Co. eventually fell short by 20 runs. Mumbai Indians delivered a clinical performance in the do-or-die battle, headlined by Rohit Sharma and Jasprit Bumrah. However, it will sting the GT camp for quite some time that the 'Player of the Match' in such a crucial fixture was dropped twice. Summing up the defeat in the GT vs MI IPL 2025 Eliminator, Gill didn’t mince his words as he pointed to the missed chances in the field.
Shubman Gill rips into sloppy fielding following the ouster in GT vs MI IPL 2025 Eliminator
Hardik Pandya-led Mumbai Indians opted to bat first against Gujarat Titans in the IPL 2025 Eliminator. The decision worked in favor of the five-time champions, as MI surged to a massive total of 228. Rohit Sharma scored 81 runs, and his powerplay partnership with Jonny Bairstow laid the perfect foundation for a big total. Skipper Pandya capitalized on that platform, smashing three sixes in the final over to push the score above par. However, early in the match, Rohit was handed two lifelines as GT fielders produced a sloppy effort in the field.
Rohit made the most of his chances after being given two lives, first by Gerald Coetzee in the deep at the score of 3 and then by Kusal Perera behind the stumps at 12. Playing his first match of the season for GT in place of Jos Buttler, Perera couldn’t make an ideal start. Rohit capitalized fully, punishing the lapses with a quality knock. Suryakumar Yadav too was dropped once on his way to a brisk 33 off 20 balls, compounding GT’s forgettable outing in the field. Skipper Shubman Gill didn’t mince words after the game, admitting the sloppy fielding only piled more pressure on their already struggling bowlers.
"Definitely not easy when we drop 3 sitters. Wasn't easy for the bowlers to control and doesn't help when you drop 3 catches," said Gill in the post-match presentation.

Despite a solid third-wicket stand between Sai Sudharsan, who struck a fluent 80 off 49, and Washington Sundar, who chipped in with an explosive 48 off 24, GT fell short in the chase. MI’s bowlers held their nerve at the death, sealing a 20-run win and punching their ticket to Qualifier 2, where they’ll face the Punjab Kings.
