Two champions staged a cracker of a contest in Mullanpur, hitting right into the nerves of a high-stake fixture. Gujarat Titans rounded off against Mumbai Indians in the IPL 2025 Eliminator, and the fans were treated to a tussle that defined a thrilling contest. Despite leaking a bit too many runs in the first innings, GT kept the chase alive with Sai Sudharsan and Washington Sundar in the middle. However, MI used their most coveted weapon in the arsenal to pull things back. Jasprit Bumrah made Sundar kneel down, and the chase unraveled from there. Eventually, the five-time champions advanced to Qualifier 2 as they won the GT vs MI IPL 2025 Eliminator by 20 runs.

Key moments from the GT vs MI IPL 2025 Eliminator

The Mullanpur turf, which challenged Punjab Kings like never before just a night ago, acted in stark contrast on Friday. Hardik Pandya read the pitch well, making the bold call of batting first in the IPL 2025 Eliminator against Gujarat Titans. Moreover, the venue that saw no moisture in the RCB vs PBKS Qualifier 1 was drenched in dew in the chase. However, GT could not capitalise on the conditions as Hardik Pandya and Co. held their nerves to save 20 runs in the 229-run chase in the do-or-die fixture. GT bowed out as MI set up the IPL 2025 Qualifier 2 against Punjab Kings in Ahmedabad.

Jonny Bairstow and Rohit Sharma set the momentum with a towering powerplay in the GT vs MI IPL 2025 Eliminator

The IPL 2025 Eliminator marked the debut of Jonny Bairstow in the Mumbai Indians pride. However, the seasoned batter showed his experience, taking on the GT bowlers seamlessly to put MI off to a good start. Rohit Sharma brought the intent, which was aided by sloppy hands in the field. Coetzee in the 2nd over and Kusal Mendis in the next over, Rohit earned two lifelines, and the former skipper didn't look back from there. Rohit took on Siraj with two boundaries before Bairstow punished Prasidh Krishna in the following over, smashing 6, 4, 0, 6, 6, 4 against the current purple cap holder of the season. Losing no wickets, MI recorded their highest total in the powerplay in IPL 2025, with the score at 79 at the end of 6 overs.

Sai Kishore managed to dismiss Bairstow at 47 off 22 soon after the powerplay, but Rohit continued his assault. The opener got to another fifty in the season as the rest of the attack shaped up around him. Suryakumar Yadav scored 33 off 20, and Tilak Varma aided with a cameo of 25 off just 11 as the run rate soared. Rohit Sharma, meanwhile, eventually fell to Prasidh Krishna at 81 off 50 in the 17th over, as it was now time for the rest of the batters to ensure an ideal finish to the innings.

Sai Sudharsan, Washington Sundar knit a fight for GT in the chase

While GT hoped for a chaseable score after restricting Naman Dhir and Santner, the MI skipper rose to the occasion. Hardik Pandya smashed Coetzee for three sixes in the last over to put MI past the 225 mark. Moreover, the pacer crumbled under Pandya's attack, leaking three extras as MI eventually called GT into the mammoth chase of 229 in the IPL 2025 Eliminator.

Gujarat Titans rode on the back of their top-order to cruise into the IPL 2025 playoffs. The top order took a hit with the exit of their No. 3, Jos Buttler, ahead of the playoffs. A lot still rested in the hands of Sai Sudharsan and Shubman Gill, an opening duo who had single-handedly chased down 200 against DC in a league stage match. 229 runs were a mighty ask but still possible for the in-form GT duo to chase, until Gill fell apart. The GT captain was undone by Trent Boult with an inswinger, Gill's Kryptonite, in the opening over of the chase.

Despite the early setback, Sudharsan maintained his rhythm. It was another show of the youngster's consistency as the opener claimed another half-century. Kusal Mendis, filling in for Jos Buttler, also laid a positive impact for GT with two sixes off Boult in the third over. However, the Sri Lankan batter walked off at 20 off 10 as he climbed on the stumps against Santner. The unfortunate dismissal brought Washington Sundar to the crease, who knitted a sublime partnership with Sudharsan.

Jasprit Bumrah claims Sundar with a reaper before MI defend the total to enter IPL 2025 Qualifer 2

The fall of two wickets rarely haunted GT and its fans as the Sudharsan-Sundar duo looked well in form to take the chase home. While Sudharsan maintained a steady pace, Sundar hit Trent Boult for back-to-back sixes, sending a warning to MI and pulling the pressure off GT in the chase. An 84-run partnership formed for the third wicket as MI took the signal to unleash their most lethal weapon. If no one makes a batter bow down, it’s time for Jasprit Bumrah to take the charge. The batter who had sent Boult to the bleachers was spread apart by a perfect yorker from Bumrah. Sundar walked off at 48 off 24 as MI’s move to bring Bumrah paid off.

The momentum shifted from there. Sudharsan, playing seamlessly until then, played a reckless shot against Richard Gleeson only to be dismissed at 80. Boult's ball found a rogue edge of Rutherford's bat in the penultimate over as all hope diminished for GT in the IPL 2025 Eliminator. While Shahrukh Khan reignited hopes briefly with a towering six, Gleeson curbed the fight despite battling a cramp in the last over. Ashwani Kumar returned to complete the over and sealed the game with the final blow, dismissing Shahrukh as MI took the road ahead with a 20-run victory.
