The double ton by Shubman Gill on the second day of the Edgbaston Test put the visitors in the driving seat. However, the hosts have stamped their mark on Day 3 of the second India vs England Test, all thanks to the pair of Harry Brook and Jamie Smith. The script has flipped and how. Both the English middle-order batters have brought up their hundreds and put their team in cruise control. Meanwhile, the brunt of their absolute domination was borne mostly by Prasidh Krishna.

Jamie Smith punishes Prasidh Krishna as the wicketkeeper batsman hits a record-breaking ton on Day 3 of the Edgbaston Test

When Day 3 of the second India vs England Test kicked off at Edgbaston, it seemed like India was well placed on the path of going from strength to strength. Mohammed Siraj sent Joe Root back to the dugout before the English captain, Ben Stokes went back to the dugout on a golden duck. However, the tides changed as soon as Jamie Smith walked out in the middle.

The young English wicketkeeper batsman launched into an aggressive approach right from the outset, particularly targeting Prasidh Krishna with a flurry of boundaries. His rapid knock powered England to an imposing 172 runs in just 27 overs during the morning session. He brought up his century in only 80 deliveries, placing it among the joint third-fastest hundreds ever by an English player in Tests.

The Edgbaston crowd erupted with a standing ovation as Smith reached the three-figure mark off Ravindra Jadeja’s bowling. Even skipper Ben Stokes stood up to applaud the 23-year-old’s spirited innings. Notably, Smith etched his name into the record books as the first England batter to score over 100 runs in a pre-lunch session without being not out overnight.

Smith had fallen to the pull shot in the opening Test but showed no hesitation in taking on the short-ball tactic again, this time with far more success. Prasidh Krishna attempted to unsettle him with a barrage of short-pitched deliveries, but Smith stayed a step ahead, dispatching the bowler with ease, especially toward the leg-side.

The highlight of his onslaught came in the 32nd over of England’s innings, where Jamie Smith hammered 32 runs off a single over from Prasidh. Meanwhile, the assault witnessed Krishna entering the wrong pages of the record book, matching the record for the most runs conceded in an over by an Indian bowler in Tests against England. Ravindra Jadeja had previously allowed the same tally in the 2024 Rajkot Test.
