Ahead of the start of India vs England Test series, there was a lot of chatter about Shubman Gill's batting abilities in the longest format of the game. However, the newly appointed India Test captain have silenced all his critics in a stunning fashion. After having scored a phenomenal hundred in the opening Test of the five-match series, Shubman continued his brilliant form with a remarkable double hundred to help the visiting Indian team finish with a mammoth score of 589 runs during the second Test at Edgbaston in Birmingham. In this article, let us take a look at the records broken by Indian Test captain Shubman Gill during that exceptional innings.

Shubman Gill notches up a fabulous knock of 269 runs in the India vs England 2nd Test

After once again losing the toss and being asked to bat first in the second Test match, Team India did not had the best of starts losing the wicket of their premier opening batter KL Rahul with just 15 runs on the scoreboard. While being promoted up the order, Karun Nair played some impressive shots during his cameo of 31 runs before getting dismissed by England speedster Brydon Carse at the stroke of lunch on Day 1 of the Edgbaston Test. Indian Test captain Shubman Gill arrived at the crease in 24th over and once again he showed great temperament and skill to keep the England bowlers at bay.

The duo of Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill bailed out the Indian innings early on with a fantastic partnership of 66 runs for the third wicket. However, the Indian team once again found themselves in a bit of trouble losing two quick wickets in the form of Rishabh Pant and Nitish Reddy. But, just like Headingley, Indian captain showed amazing composure to negate the good balls and also score at a fine strike-rate. He went on to score his second Test century in SENA countries, however, it looked like the Indian captain was aiming for a massive individual score.

It was the sensational 213-run partnership between Ravindra Jadeja and Shubman that helped India secure a dominating position in the Test match. Jadeja contributed with an excellent knock of 89 runs that included 10 fours and 1 six. However, Indian skipper Shubman Gill composed a staggering innings of 269 runs off 387 balls that consisted of 30 fours and 3 sixes. With this mind-boggling cricket score, Shubman also went past Sachin Tendulkar's record of highest score by an Indian in SENA countries. After a lot of talks about his batting abilities in overseas conditions, Shubman has already proved a point having scored more than 400 runs so far in just three innings of this India vs England five-match Test series.

After being on the field for more than 150 overs, hosts England were bound to be under some sort of pressure even on a flat Edgbaston pitch. While playing his first match of the England vs India Test series, pace bowler Akash Deep started things off on a wonderful note dismissing the duo of Ben Duckett and Ollie Pope in quick succession. Indian speedster Mohammed Siraj then got the wicket of Zak Crawley to reduce the English side at 25 for 3 in just 7.1 overs. The pair of Joe Root and Harry Brook were unbeaten on the crease at stumps on Day 2.
