Dewald Brevis: A superstar in the making
South African cricketer Dewald Brevis is an upcoming superstar! Many people might argue it’s still too early to say. He has played only 2 Tests, 3 ODIs, and 10 T20 internationals in his career. Brevis, however, has made quite an impact in the T20 format and is attracting a lot of attention. At just 22, he has already played in all the top T20 leagues around the world, including the Indian Premier League, SA 20, and the Caribbean Premier League. In the recent edition of the Indian Premier League, he was included in the Chennai Super Kings’ squad midway through the tournament.
Brevis improved the morale in the Chennai Super Kings’ camp by playing some stunning knocks while batting in the middle order. He provided the much-needed impetus in the middle overs, but there was little support from the other batters. CSK had a bad season, but they acquired a true gem of a cricketer, who could serve them for many years to come. Dewald Brevis recently hogged the spotlight in the recent white-ball series against Australia. The shots he played were simply a treat to the eyes. The second T20I saw Brevis smash an unbeaten 125 off 56 balls, a knock which was laced with 12 fours and 8 sixes.
Scoring a ton in T20Is at a strike rate of 223.21 requires not only an aggressive style of hitting but also a great display of skill and temperament. Brevis isn’t someone who just wants to dominate with his ruthless hitting. He wants to stay there for a long period and play big knocks. His ton against Australia wasn’t the first time he batted the opposition out of the game. Brevis hogged a lot of attention after he smashed a 35-ball hundred in the CSA T20 Challenge. He didn’t stop there and went on to score 162 off just 57 balls, including 13 sixes. He broke the record of fastest T20 century ever by a South African batter and also the fastest 150 in the world. Dewald Brevis was just 19 years old at that time.
Dewald Brevis first grabbed attention in the 2022 Under-19 World Cup, where he smashed the record of scoring the most runs in a single edition of the tournament. He surpassed Shikhar Dhawan by smashing 506 in 6 matches at an average of 84.33. Many young cricketers tend to get carried away after making such an explosive start to thier international cricket.
However, the wise South African has attributed his success to hard work and luck in equal measure. He has always been grateful for his success and is a believer in God’s timing. The fact that he went unsold in the IPL 2025 auction, came in midway through the tournament, and then dominated with the bat suggests that luck indeed plays a big part in the journey of every successful being.
"I believe God blessed me with a talent to play like that, to play aggressively. Last year, on 28 December, I made that commitment. I got a few people, they know who they are, who I trust, and the main thing was just to be the original Dewald and to be on that side of it and every ball, wherever it is, to watch it and to hit it." Brevis said after a record-breaking ton vs Australia.
“I just want to be the same guy who plays all formats. I'm not really trying to make any big changes. It's all about watching the ball and just being true to myself. The key fact is, we all know you have to bat longer. In order to bat longer, you have to take it ball by ball and not change the way you play a ball. So I'm not going to change anything,” Brevis reflected on his Test debut.
Dewald Brevis recently made his ODI debut in the first ODI against Australia. He announced his arrival with a first-ball six before getting out on the next ball. He has now represented South Africa in all three formats and has expressed his aspiration of becoming an all-format batter.
After smashing the ton against Australia, Brevis said,
"This is just the start, if I could say it like that,"
Well, the start has been pleasant, and the fans would love to see what the future holds for this talented South African batter.
