IPL 2025 suspended for 'one week' as cross-border tensions escalate swiftly

In the latest update, IPL has confirmed that the suspension is for one week only. On Thursday, the PBKS vs DC match, scheduled in Dharamsala, was abandoned midway as security concerns rose. With Dharamsala being considerably close to the border, the venue was swiftly evacuated as Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals shared the points. With the LSG vs RCB match next in line, the decision cropped up that the governing council has suspended the season.

The decision comes with a number of reasons latched to it. While security remains the top priority, the league resuming while the Indian forces remain at war seemed contentious. Owing full support to the protectors and the civilians at the border, the council deemed it fit to give IPL 2025 a break. Now, in a detailed explanation, the governing council has disclosed the tenure of the suspension. IPL 2025 has been suspended for one week. The BCCI has taken the step to ensure the collective interest of all stakeholders, from players to broadcasters. The board instilled utmost belief in the armed forces to protect national security. However, with the tensions at an all-time high, there is no logic in continuing with the proceedings.

"The decision was taken by the IPL Governing Council after due consultation with all key stakeholders following the representations from most of the franchisees, who conveyed the concern and sentiments of their players, and also the views of the broadcaster, sponsors and fans; while the BCCI reposes full faith in the strength and preparedness of our armed forces, the Board considered it prudent to act in the collective interest of all stakeholders," the official statement read.

"At this critical juncture, the BCCI stands firmly with the nation. We express our solidarity with the Government of India, the Armed Forces and the people of our country. The Board salutes the bravery, courage, and selfless service of our armed forces, whose heroic efforts under Operation Sindoor continue to protect and inspire the nation, as they lead a resolute response to the recent terrorist attack and the unwarranted aggression by Pakistan’s armed forces," it added.

Governing Council talks about the updated IPL 2025 schedule following the suspension

It is understandable that the recently announced decision could be altered depending on the conditions that unfold in the following week. The governing council, moreover, explained that the revised schedule for the remaining part of IPL 2025 would be shared in due course. The suspension comes a day after the PBKS vs DC match ended up being abandoned in Dharamsala. While the teams have already shared the points for that match, the season is likely to pick up from the LSG vs RCB match.

At the time of suspension, IPL 2025 had 12 matches left at the group stage. Following that, the IPL 2025 playoffs were in line to start from 20 May, Tuesday. Meanwhile, the IPL 2025 final was scheduled for 25 May, Sunday at Eden Gardens. With the postponement, the playoffs and final are in line to be moved further ahead in June.

Punjab Kings smashed 122 runs in just 10 overs against Delhi Capitals in Dharamsala. If the match had not been abandoned and the home team had managed to win the tussle, Punjab Kings would have earned the IPL 2025 playoffs qualification in Dharamsala. However, as the match ended up being abandoned, both PBKS and DC earned a point each. Now, Punjab Kings sit at the third spot with 16 points, behind Gujarat Titans and Royal Challengers Bengaluru. 

Meanwhile, Delhi Capitals gained another chance to stay alive in the IPL 2025 playoffs qualification race. With 14 points, DC sits at the fifth spot, behind Mumbai Indians, who have the same points but a better NRR and chance to qualify into the final four. Chennai Super Kings, Rajasthan Royals, Sunrisers Hyderabad, and Kolkata Knight Riders have been eliminated. Lucknow Super Giants hang by a thread while pitted in the mid-table tussle with Delhi Capitals. With the entire nation standing in support of the armed forces who fight the enemy bravely, tensions are anticipated to be curbed swiftly. Following the positive update, IPL 2025 is likely to restart from where the council has put a break.
