The last ODI on the Australia Tour finally saw the tide turn for Team India as the Men in Blue averted a series whitewash against the Kangaroos. A lot of positives emerged in Sydney as the visitors beat the hosts by 9 wickets in the IND vs AUS 3rd ODI. Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli delivered the performance that fans had been waiting for all this while, with the opener smashing a century and forging a 168-run partnership with Kohli. However, amid many positives, the final fixture in Sydney also dealt a nasty blow to the unit. India's vice-captain, Shreyas Iyer, finished the tour with a serious injury, which has now been revealed to be significantly more severe than initially assessed.
Shreyas Iyer injury: India's T20I vice-captain set to be discharged soon, Suryakumar Yadav talks about his condition
Shreyas Iyer showcased an exemplary display of dedication, putting his entire body on the line to dismiss Alex Carey with an impressive catch. As spectacular as the grab was, Iyer ended up injuring himself severely in the process. The catch took place in the 34th over of the game, and Iyer did not return to the field thereafter. With Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma completing the chase unbeaten, he was not required to bat. Following the match, it was reported that the 30-year-old had injured his rib cage and could be sidelined for up to three weeks.
However, days after the completion of the IND vs AUS 3rd ODI, reports made headlines, highlighting the worrying condition of the Shreyas Iyer injury. It was revealed that he had been admitted to a hospital in Sydney after collapsing in the dressing room. With internal bleeding suspected, Iyer’s vitals reportedly dropped, prompting an immediate rush to the ICU. Further updates confirmed that the batter had sustained an injury to his spleen. Iyer spent two days in the ICU, receiving treatment for a laceration on his spleen.
Thankfully, fresh updates have suggested that Shreyas Iyer is now out of the ICU and is expected to be discharged soon. His family, who were earlier reported to be traveling to Sydney, have curtailed their plans, indicating that Iyer might be on his way back to India shortly. Spleen injuries can vary in terms of severity, and with Iyer having been admitted to the ICU, the laceration was initially assessed to be serious.
Meanwhile, the focus now shifts to the T20I leg of the India vs Australia series. The Men in Blue, led by Suryakumar Yadav, are scheduled to play five T20Is against Mitchell Marsh and Co. Before SKY kicks off the series on 29 October, the India skipper spoke about Iyer. Based on the conversations he had with teammates and other personnel from the Indian camp in Sydney, Surya shared that the atmosphere in the dressing room took a serious turn after Iyer suffered the “unexpected and unfortunate” injury. His remarks came at a time when reports indicated that India’s vice-captain had been shifted out of the ICU at a Sydney hospital, offering some relief regarding his recovery.
Addressing the press ahead of the upcoming five-match India vs Australia T20I series, Suryakumar Yadav mentioned that although the catch looked fairly simple when seen from a distance, players and support staff who were near the field noted that Iyer appeared visibly distressed, and the severity of the situation became clear only when he was taken inside with assistance from the physio.
“When we saw that catch from the outside, we thought it was a normal play. But the players who were there at that time said that after he went to the dressing room, it felt like Iyer needed medical attention,” Suryakumar said. "Then he was taken to the specialist. Doctors and physiotherapists said that what happened was unfortunate and rare. But he is recovering well, and BCCI is in full support,' he added.
