Social media shows zero sensitivity on Shreyas Iyer’s injury

This has to be one of the most bizarre days in Indian sports, where two Indian star athletes’ health and well-being has come into focus. While Olympic medallist PV Sindhu, who shone at the 2016 Rio Olympics as well as the Tokyo Olympics put out a statement on Monday she was halting her 2025 season on medical grounds, the refusal to believe Shreyas Iyer, who got injured while fielding in the third ODI against Australia, is actually recovering, is weird. Even as the BCCI put out an official statement, the interpretations have been baseless on the health of Shreyas. This is surely not the way social media should be behaving when India’s ODI vice- captain has suffered an injury in his ribcage as a result of which his “spleen has been lacerated.”

Where is the need to challenge the statement/version put out by the BCCI that Shreyas is in hospital and his health is being closely monitored. Surely, hospitals in Australia are well-equipped to deal with trauma and will not put out statements needlessly. That is being responsible, unlike social media handles on X which have come out with own versions. The worst, creating panic, that Shreyas Iyer’s parents will get urgent visas and fly Down Under. One Turf News can confirm, Shreyas is out if danger and his parents are very much in Mumbai. His sister is likely to fly to Sydney, though.

On Monday, it was not just the insensitive cricket fan who made weird statements.  I had posted on X/Twitter, after due diligence, Shreyas is much better than before when he was admitted and there was no need for panic. Replies to my post were obnoxious, some suggesting the worst for Shreyas. One dared to say I am misguiding folks and I should name my source. Diligent journalism demands making proper inquiries before writing on social media or any digital platform. If, even heath has been trivialised, it is sad. This goes to show how toxic or pathetic social media can be even during a major crisis.

This is a new trend, something which needs to be condemned. In the past, we have seen how ‘news’ would break out that Diego Maradona and Pele had taken ill and ‘almost departed.’ Such news was never put out by credible wire services, unless hospital or family sources had been spoken to. It was many years later, Pele and Diego departed, finally.

To be insensitive to health issues, tragedy and anything which is sensitive is pathetic. If social media is a free-for-all, then do not come up with worst-case scenarios. Please. There is hope even when someone is seriously unwell. Shreyas is not at that stage now. He is recuperating and updates will come from the BCCI, which is responsible for Shreyas’ health.

As regards PV Sindhu, her post was very clear. She has said the foot injury sustained in the European leg of the BWF Tour has made it impossible to continue in 2025. She is undergoing rehab and hopes to be back in 2026 fully fit. Sindhu has spoken on how injuries are part of any athlete’s career. This is the best was she has been able to shut out all people who can interpret her injury. Hopefully, people will understand, only after Shreyas Iyers’ own social media handle comes out with a post in coming days, he is alive and kicking.
