Frances Tiafoe beats Daniil Medvedev, puts Team World in the lead at Laver Cup
With Day 2 of the Laver Cup underway in Berlin, Team World has imposed dominance at Team Europe with a 4-2 scoreline. Frances Tiafoe secured a crucial win for Team World in the Laver Cup on Saturday, defeating Daniil Medvedev to give his team the lead. The American, who recently made it to the semifinals of the U.S. Open, claimed victory after a hard-fought three-set battle, winning 3-6, 6-4, and 10-5 in the deciding match tiebreaker.
The Laver Cup is scheduled across three days with the points system similar to that of the Ryder Cup in Golf. A win on Day 1 of the tournament awards 1 point, 2 points for a win on the second day, and three points on the final day. Ultimately, the team with 13 points on the final day takes the trophy home. Team World has won the previous two editions consecutively and seem to be in a favourable condition in the ongoing season as well.
Frances Tiafoe leads Team World to a 4-2 lead over Team Europe at Laver Cup
Frances Tiafoe took an hour and 35 minutes to claim his first-ever win over the World No. 5 ranked Daniil Medvedev. Beating a first set defeat, Tiafoe won the following sets 6-4, 10-5 against the Team Europe opponent. Tiafoe looked ecstatic after the win as he opened up on the clash against Medvedev. The US Open semi-finalist went on to say that he felt like ‘Roger Federer’ playing at the Uber Arena.
“It was crazy, I played pretty well there in that second set,” said Tiafoe. “Honestly, I just started having fun,” he added. “I started to find my rhythm … midway in the second [set] and in the tiebreak, I felt like I was Roger Federer, honestly,” joked Tiafoe, who was present among the audience in the stands at the moment. “I respect everyone, but I’m just not fearing anyone at the moment,” said Tiafoe. The American had presented a considerable challenge to the Spaniard earlier at Wimbledon this year.
Tiafoe’s win pushed Team World into a 4-2 lead over Team Europe ahead of the clash between Carlos Alcaraz and Team World’s Ben Shelton in the singles match. Scheduled for later in Saturday, Germany's Alexander Zverev would face off against the USA’s Taylor Fritz. The day's action is capped off with a doubles match featuring Europe's Casper Ruud and Stefanos Tsitsipas taking on the pairing of Ben Shelton and Alejandro Tabilo for Team World.
