Hail Iga Swiatek, the Polish star. At Centre Court on Saturday, the 24-year-old rank outsider showed feel and flourish as she demolished Amanda Animisova 6-0, 6-0 in one of the most ruthless demolition acts to win the ladies singles title and lift the Venus Rosewater Dish.

Considering that the hype had been on Aryna Sabalenka and Elena Rybakina at the start of the season’s third Grand Slam, for Iga to creep her way up the draw and then peak was defining. Perhaps, only in the second round she was stretched. Maybe, not being too much in focus also helped her avoid the glare in Sunday’s final.

Given the way Amanda, an American, had shown promise in defeating Aryna Sabalenka in the semi-finals, she had, perhaps, peaked too early. Many have been critical of Iga, who, like Jannik Sinner had also served a short doping suspension, in 2024. Interestingly, when the suspension began and ended became a joke and Iga was subjected to harsh criticism and hauled over the coals.

All that was a thing of the past, as the once-favourite on clay, crushed Amanda 6-0. 6-0 in 57 minutes. The template for Iga’s win was aggression and how she served well. It included three aces and also a high percentage of first serves which she rifled in. The same serve was what let down Amanda. Was it pressure or just an off day, it made for bad viewing, overall, since American women have done well in the 2025 tennis season.

For Iga, personally, this win is a great comeback, as she wins her first big title on grass. Incidentally, she is the first Polish girl, at 24, to win Wimbledon in its rich history. By the time Iga had prepared herself for the formalities of receiving the trophy, social media had gone ballistic, trashing the American. Yes, it was one of the worst final and will be remembered for wrong reasons. To not win one game and be unable to produce potent groundstrokes allowed Iga to be in control every minute.

Old timers recalled how once Steffi Graf destroyed Natasha Zvereva at the French Open with a double bagel score, 6-0, 6-0. For Iga, the comparison can be avoided, as this is her first big win in ages as she had won her sixth Grand Slam title. For sure, if some fans were angry at Wimbledon, they had paid big prices for the Centre Court seats.

All the hype was on a first Wimbledon final for both women. In the end, it is now certain, Iga was a class act and was better prepared to handle the big stage. As for Amanda Aminisova, this kind of a listless performance will haunt her for a long time. Stage fright is something talked of. Today, it was in full bloom as Iga showed she is back in business. This was also a 6/6 for Iga, winning all finals she has been in till now at the Majors. A record like this once stood in the name of Monica Seles.
