Paris Olympics 2024: Aman Sehrawat Wins The Bronze Medal In The Men's 57 Kg Wrestling Event
The Indian wrestling campaign at the ongoing Paris Olympics has finally seen success. The last few days had brought a string of disappointments for the team, including the disqualification of Vinesh Phogat right before her final bout. Phogat was disqualified for being 100 grams overweight for the 50 kg category, causing her to lose her claim on the silver medal that had otherwise been secured with her semi-final win. However, Aman Sehrawat has now brought home a medal by winning the bronze in the men’s 57 kg freestyle wrestling event.
In his debut Olympic season, Aman Sehrawat showcased his skills from the very start. Sehrawat won his opening match against Macedonia’s Vladimir Egorov 10-0 due to technical superiority. He then competed in the quarterfinal on the same day, where he faced Zelimkhan Abakarov of Albania. Sehrawat delivered a similar performance to his pre-quarterfinal victory, defeating Abakarov 12-0 and once again winning on technical superiority.
Next, Sehrawat met Japan’s Rei Higuchi in the semi-final on Thursday. Unfortunately, Sehrawat's run for gold was halted by Higuchi, who defeated the 21-year-old Indian 10-0. The Japanese wrestler swiftly concluded the bout by achieving technical superiority over Sehrawat. Despite this setback, Aman retained the opportunity to contest for a bronze medal in a match scheduled for Friday.

Aman Sehrawat faced Darian Toi Cruz of Puerto Rico in the bronze medal match in the men’s 57 kg category. The bout initially featured a close contest between the two wrestlers, with Cruz scoring the first point. However, Aman turned the tide in the second half, scoring quickly to build a 5-point lead against the Puerto Rican, even as Cruz earned 2 points from a challenge. Ultimately, Aman won the match 13-5 against Darian Toi Cruz, securing the 5th bronze medal for India at the Paris Olympics.
With his victory, Aman Sehrawat has added another bronze medal to India's tally at the 2024 Paris Olympics. This brings India's total medal count to six, matching the country’s performance at the 2012 London Olympics. Moreover, Sehrawat’s win continues India’s streak of winning at least one medal in wrestling at every Olympic Games since the 2008 Beijing Olympics. India’s current medal haul at the Paris Olympics stands at five bronze medals and a silver by Neeraj Chopra in the Javelin Throw.
