Paris Olympics 2024: A look at Arshad Nadeem-Neeraj Chopra camaraderie

Before the Paris Olympics 2024, Pakistan's Arshad Nadeem had never beaten Neeraj Chopra. Whereas Neeraj is all about consistency personified. In an inspirational comeback, Nadeem who had to borrow money from fellow villagers to fund his early training took the world by storm. Before they emerged on the scene, no one had even imagined an Indian and Pakistani could own world-level track and field events. The top five throws at the Javelin Throw final in the 2024 Summer Olympic Games read: 92.97m, 89.45m, 88.45m, 88.50m and 87.72m. The Olympic Games has rarely seen a grouping this tight, this high up on the scale. It was all about Arshad Nadeem vs Neeraj Chopra.

Rivalry or Camaraderie? - The Neeraj Chopra and Arshad Nadeem story

Between 2018 and 2021 the rivalry wasn't that close on the field, but Arshad Nadeem was within touching distance of Neeraj Chopra. In 2022, Arshad Nadeem won Commonwealth gold in the absence of Neeraj Chopra with a monster throw of 90.18m and told reporters that he missed his friend in Birmingham. After finishing 1-2 in the 2023 World Championships, Arshad Nadeem had said he'd like a repeat of it at the Paris Olympics 2024. And finally, Nadeem's wish was fulfilled. It was India vs Pakistan at the Olympics. This is a rivalry that both take great pride in. It has always been intense but somehow, they are also able to see the big picture.

The Neeraj Chopra and Arshad Nadeem show at the Paris Olympics 2024

India's golden boy Neeraj Chopra came into the finals as a strong contender to defend his title. He had achieved a massive season best of 89.34m on his first try in the qualification round. Unfortunately, on the night of the final, Neeraj registered a foul on his first attempt, but the field was just getting warmed up and there was little cause for concern. However, before his second turn, Pakistan's Arshad Nadeem registered an incredible 92.97m on his second try, breaking the Olympic record.

While Neeraj Chopra achieved a mark of 89.45m on his second throw, his remaining four attempts were registered as fouls and he had to settle for a silver medal. Speaking to the media after the Javelin Throw final, Neeraj Chopra said that after Nadeem registered his eventual gold-medal winning throw, he had a feeling that while he gave his best, it was Pakistanโ€™s Arshad Nadeemโ€™s day to win gold. Chopra said it was time to assess his performance and focus on future improvements.

"Personally, when Arshad (Nadeem) threw his second throw, where he achieved a mark of 9.97m, I felt like I'd be able to do it. Today was Arshad's day. I gave my best, but some things need to be addressed and worked on. India played well at the Paris Olympics. Our national anthem may not have been played today, but it will be heard in the future," Neeraj Chopra said.

With his podium finish in the Javelin Throw final, Neeraj Chopra has become the first Indian to win a silver at the Paris Olympics 2024. Neeraj has also cemented his status as one of the nation's best athletes of this century. The two-time Olympic medalist capped off the day by praising Arshad Nadeem while letting fans know that they can expect more from him in the future. The Neeraj Chopra and Arshad Nadeem camaraderie have been one of the best moments of this Olympics. There was this picture of them at the 2018 Asian Games, heads together, flags around each other, that had an iconic feeling to it. But who could have predicted where they were both headed?
