Satwik-Chirag get a comfortable group at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games

Ten days remain until the start of the much-awaited 2024 Paris Olympics. India's Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty have been drawn in Group C for the men's doubles badminton competition at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games. The draw for the 2024 Paris Olympics badminton men's doubles group stage took place on Monday at the Badminton World Federation (BWF) headquarters in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The initial group stage draw for all other events was held on Friday. World Championships bronze medallists Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, who are third in the badminton world rankings, were seeded and drawn in Group C. The two-time Commonwealth Games champions have been drawn alongside the Indonesian pair of Fajar Alfian and Muhammad Rian Ardianto.

Satwik-Chirag get a comfortable group at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games

1. Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty have been drawn in men's doubles Group C

World Championships bronze medallists Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty who are third in the badminton world rankings, were seeded and drawn in Group C. The two-time Commonwealth Games champions have been drawn alongside the Indonesian pair of Fajar Alfian and Muhammad Rian Ardianto. World No. 6 Alfian-Ardianto is the only other badminton pair in the top 10 placed in Group C. The men's doubles badminton Group C consists of world No. 31 Mark Lamsfuss and Marvin Seidel of Germany, as well as the world No. 43 French pair of Lucas Corvee and Ronan Labar.

Talking about the latest Badminton news, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty have competed against the Indonesian pair of Alfian-Ardianto five times and hold a favourable 3-2 head-to-head record. The most recent encounter was at the Korea Open 2023, where the Indian duo emerged victorious. The reigning Asian Games champions have also maintained an undefeated record against their German and French group-stage opponents. It will be interesting to see whether the dynamic Indian badminton duo can get India up on the medal tally.

2. Draw for other Indian shuttlers at the 2024 Summer Olympic Games

Two-time Olympic medalist PV Sindhu and India's top-ranked men's singles player HS Prannoy also received favourable draws for the group stage at the Paris 2024 Olympics on Friday. PV Sindhu is one of the Indian flag bearers during the opening ceremony of the 2024 Paris Olympics. The star badminton player will lead a seven-member Indian badminton team at the 2024 Summer Olympics. PV Sindhu will be the only shuttler in the women's singles category, finishing 12th in the Race to Paris Rankings. Sindhu will start her Olympic journey in Group M, while Prannoy has been placed in Group K.

World No. 13 Sindhu and Prannoy, seeded 13th, are both comfortably ahead of all their opponents in their respective groups. Meanwhile, the unseeded Lakshya Sen will compete against world No. 3 Jonatan Christie of Indonesia in Group L of the men's singles. The reigning All-England champion holds a 4-1 head-to-head advantage over Sen. If Prannoy and Sen both win their respective groups, they will compete against each other in the round of 16. In the women's doubles, Tanisha Crasto and Ashwini Ponnappa are in Group C and will face the fourth-seeded Nami Matsuyama and Chiharu Shida of Japan.

Badminton will run from Saturday, July 27, to August 5. The sport's first medals will be awarded on Friday, August 2, when the mixed doubles medal matches are scheduled. The women's doubles medal matches take place on Saturday, August 3 followed by the men's doubles medal matches on Sunday, August 4. The competition concludes with the men's and women's singles medal matches on August 5. Porte de La Chapelle Arena in northern Paris will host the Olympic badminton competitions.
