Max Verstappen's possible move to Mercedes for the 2026 Formula 1 season has been the subject of heightened rumours in the wake of recent events and Red Bull's catastrophic Austrian Grand Prix. According to reports, the current world champion is in "solid talks" with Mercedes and is "open" to leaving Red Bull. This comes amid growing internal conflicts at Red Bull, which have been further complicated by their significant performance deficit to McLaren and Verstappen's early retirement from the Austrian GP.

The Dutchman's contract with Red Bull runs until 2028, but is widely believed to contain a performance-related exit clause. One such clause, as pointed out by former Red Bull driver Robert Doornbos, reportedly allows Verstappen to leave if the team does not finish in the top two of the Constructors' Championship by mid-season, a scenario that has now become active given Red Bull's current struggles.

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has admitted to "talks behind closed doors" with Verstappen's entourage, fuelling speculation. While Wolff initially downplayed the possibility of such a move, recent events have clearly changed the landscape. Meanwhile, Red Bull's Christian Horner has dismissed the reports as "noise" and reiterated Verstappen's contract is until 2028.

If Verstappen does make the sensational move, it will undoubtedly reshape the Formula 1 grid, raising questions over the future of Mercedes' current drivers, George Russell and Kimi Antonelli. More clarity on this high-stakes driver market saga is expected in the coming weeks ahead of the summer holidays.
