While there are many circuits across the globe, Shanghai International Circuit stands as one of Formula 1’s distinctive and modern venues. Designed by the famous architect Hermann Tilke, the 5.45 km track was inaugurated in 2004, underlining China's ambitions for this tournament. The unique layout of the ground makes it distinct from the rest, as one can see the "上"  shape from the top view, meaning “upward” or “ascend” according to Chinese.

What makes the Shanghai International Circuit different?

What sets the Shanghai International Circuit apart is the technical challenges. The circuit features one of the longest straights of F1. It is 1.2 km, followed by a tight hairpin, creating prime overtaking opportunities for the competitors. The signature element of the track remains the demanding Turn 1-2 complex. A tightening spiral that subjects drivers to sustained lateral G-forces as the fans feel like a never-ending corner.

Who have been the Champions of Shanghai?

Ever since its inception in 2004, the Chinese Grand Prix has seen multiple champions. However, Lewis Hamilton stands as the undisputed master of Shanghai with six victories across three decades. He won in 2008 for the first time while winning his last trophy there in 2023. Fernando Alonso claimed two victories at the Shanghai International Circuit with Kimi, Vettel, and Nico Rosberg standing on the podium.

The inaugural race in 2004 saw Rubens Barrichello winning for Ferrari while Schumacher had an uncharacteristic spin and finished 12th. The circuit has seen its fair share of dramatic moments, including Button’s stunning victory in wet conditions during 2010 and Ricciardo’s remarkable change from sixth to first in just ten laps in 2018.

The Chinese Grand Prix was absent from the F1 calendar between 2020-2022 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, making its return in 2023 all the more celebrated. Today, the Shanghai International Circuit continues to provide one of the most technically challenging yet rewarding races of the season.

What did Lewis Hamilton say about the Shanghai International Circuit?

It's a track that I really do love driving on. It's got so many great challenges throughout. It's one of the best tracks that they've built over the last couple of decades.
