"We are still a few years away from winning Premier League trophy", says Chelsea legend John Terry
Every former player and legend of a club wants to see their team succeed on a big stage after their departure. One such player is Chelsea’s John Terry. The legendary center-back recently aired his frustration, stating that his club is still half a decade away from winning major honours. Speaking to the media, John Terry expressed his desire to see his former side win the biggest trophies. While he shared his aspirations, he also offered a realistic assessment of the club’s current situation.
He stated that Chelsea are still a few years away from winning the league again. He praised rivals like Arsenal, Manchester City, and Liverpool for being ahead of Chelsea in recent times. Terry highlighted that the Blues must catch up with them before becoming a force to reckon with once more. He also remarked that if the club starts signing the best players in every position, it will be clear to both him and the fans where the club is headed. He said:
I get frustrated because I want Chelsea to be winning the biggest trophies. Are we close? I think we are still a few years away from competing for the Premier League again. We need to catch Arsenal, Man City and Liverpool to even have a chance of doing that. I think we need experience. I think it’s through winning. If we’re competing for a top striker, a top keeper, I know where I’d be going.
While Chelsea have managed to qualify for the Champions League after a fourth-place finish, John Terry emphasized that to attract top players, the club needs to win major trophies like the Champions League and the Premier League. He pointed out that this is the reason why the club ends up signing the second or third-best striker available in the market. Terry also highlighted the absence of iconic figures in the current squad, mentioning that the club no longer has players like Didier Drogba or Eden Hazard for the younger generation to look up to. He said:
Fans need to understand that to sign top players and improve your group then you have to attract the best players then you have to win and compete for the biggest trophies.
That’s the Champions League, the Premier League and we’re not doing that at the minute. We probably have to say: ‘we’ll take the second best striker, the third best striker, whatever that looks like.’ That’s where we are. That’s probably why we’ve gone down the younger route at the minute
