Coming off a one-match suspension, Lionel Messi delivered another classical performance in a 2-1 victory over Atlas in the Leagues Cup opener on Wednesday. Messi was involved in both goals, delivering critical assists, with one coming in the stoppage time. In the Leagues Cup opener, Messi set up the first goal with a slick pass after receiving a through ball from Sergio Busquets. Telasco Segovia scored the first goal in the 58th minute. Atlas came back with the 80th minute strike, with Rivaldo Lozano scoring the equalizer.

The match went down to the wire, and, once again, it was Lionel Messi, who linked up with Marcelo Weigandt to strike the winning goal in the 96th minute. It was initially ruled offside, but VAR confirmed the goal, later. And, what followed was a huge roar from the Inter Miami fans and an animated celebration from Lionel Messi. Messi’s uncharacteristic celebration caught attention as he went straight face-to-face with the opposition player. The video clip went viral on the internet pretty quickly.

Here’s a look at that:

Argentine midfielder Rodrigo De Paul also made his debut for Inter Miami in the League Cup opener. De Paul officially signed with the club last week.

Lionel Messi continues his remarkable run in Major League Soccer

The former Barcelona footballer has shown sensational form in the ongoing Major League Soccer season. He is only behind Sam Surridge in the top-scorers list. In 18 games played in MLS, Messi now has 18 goals and 10 assists to his name. Messi joined Inter Miami in 2023 via free transfer and has a total of 39 goals in 43 MLS appearances. Inter Miami is slated to play their next League Cup encounter against Necaxa on 3rd August 2025.
