Real Madrid star Kylian Mbappe made history by scoring in his team’s Club World Cup quarter-final victory over Borussia Dortmund. The France international became the first-ever Los Blancos player to score in seven competitions in a single season. Mbappe’s goals have come in the UEFA Super Cup, La Liga, Champions League, FIFA Intercontinental Cup, Spanish Super Cup, Copa del Rey, and Club World Cup.

The only other player who has come close to matching Mbappe is Los Blancos legend Karim Benzema. Benzema, who is also from France, scored in six different competitions during the 2022-23 season. Mbappe has scored 44 goals for Madrid in all competitions this season. The only other player to have achieved the same from France before is also Benzema.

A historic yet bittersweet campaign for Mbappe as Madrid fall short in major competitions

Should Mbappe score one more goal for Madrid this season, he will bring his overall tally for the season to 45. Nobody has ever reached this total. As a whole, the season for Mbappe has been mixed. He failed to help his side win the La Liga or the Champions League. He joined Madrid at the start of the season from PSG with a view to winning the Champions League, the one trophy that has been missing from his trophy cabinet.

Interestingly, it was PSG, the club that Mbappe left who won the Champions League this season. One of the main reasons that Mbappe left PSG was due to their inability to win the Champions League and they went on to win their first Champions League title this season. Next year will be an interesting one for Mbappe.

He will be hoping to lead Madrid back to glory in the Champions League and La Liga next season under new coach Xabi Alonso. Alonso has replaced Carlo Ancelotti. Ancelotti’s second spell at the club ended after four years and he has since taken up a role as manager of Brazil. He has become Brazil’s first foreign-born manager and will be hoping to lead the club to success at the World Cup next year. Brazil, who have won the World Cup a record five times, have not won the tournament since 2002.
