Rafa Bids Farewell to Barcelona: An End of an Era
Rafa Marquez has spoken about his decision to leave Barcelona Atletic and join the Mexico National Team. Márquez left just as his team was coming back for pre-season and after agreeing to stay on for another campaign. He acknowledges that it was a very tough decision to make, but he couldn't miss the opportunity.
He said: "I've spent many days analyzing the decision to leave Barcelona Atletic and take on a new challenge. I've never liked to be in a comfort zone in my life. I'm always looking for growth, and these two years at Barcelona have made me realize that there's a passion and an idea I must continue to pursue through hard work. I'm grateful for the opportunity that Barcelona has given me. Marquez said: 'I hope it's not a goodbye, but see you soon.'
Márquez will be working as an assistant to Javier Aguirre with Mexico and will be taking over after the 2026 World Cup. He's certainly excited about his new role.
"I'll face this new challenge with the responsibility it deserves. First of all, it's an honor to represent my country in such an important role, playing in a World Cup at home and being able to transmit all my knowledge. I'll give my best to help improve each area we need to work on. I'll always try to spread positivity and hope that good results will accompany us."
Club's official statement: “Rafa will not continue as a coach of Barcelona Atletic. The Mexican coach has reached an agreement with FC Barcelona to release his contract, to take on a new professional challenge.
“The club thanks Rafa for his dedication and professionalism, during all this time in which he has been a fundamental piece in the training of players. We wish him the best of luck in the future, both in sporting and personal fields."
Barcelona will now need to find a new replacement for Marquez. Juliano Belletti, who worked closely with Rafa last season and has been put in charge of Juvenil A, is one possible option.
