Onana's future uncertain as United eye Martinez and Carnesecchi
Manchester United are reportedly willing to sell goalkeeper Andre Onana for £30 million. The Cameroon international joined the club two seasons ago from Inter Milan. While he has delivered some impressive performances since succeeding David de Gea as the club’s first-choice keeper, his time at the club has not received a positive reception overall. His inconsistency and positioning have been a subject of criticism. His second season at the club was also more disappointing than the first. Due to struggles for consistency last season, club manager Ruben Amorim opted to also play Altay Bayindir last season.
United are set to undergo an overhaul this summer. The club finished the season in 15th place last season - their worst ever finish in the Premier League era. Many have called on the club to sign a successor to Onana ahead of the start of next season. Onana himself appears to currently be unsure where exactly he will be playing his football next season and he has been linked with a potential move to Monaco. At the moment though, it looks likely that Onana will remain at United as clubs may not be willing to fork out the money that is required for his services.
Other goalkeepers that Manchester United have been linked with include former Aston Villa keeper Emiliano Martinez and Atalanta’s Marco Carnesecchi. Martinez, 32, who won the 2022 World Cup with Argentina, joined Aston Villa in 2020 and went on to make over 100 appearances for the club. Given that his trophy cabinet at club level lacks success, Martinez will now be looking for a big move while he is still at the prime of his powers. He still has a lot of good football left in him and will not be short of offers given that he is a free agent and rated as one of the best goalkeepers in the world.
Meanwhile, United have also been linked with a deal for Javi Garcia from Valencia. United are aiming to bolster their attack and have already added Matheus Cunha to the club’s roster. They have also been strongly linked with Bryan Mbuemo from Brentford.
