Lionel Messi sets another Major MLS record in win over New England Revolution

Major League Soccer 2024-25

Legendary footballer Lionel Messi continues to shine for Inter Miami in Major League Soccer. On Wednesday, he etched another record to his name, becoming the first ever player in the tournament’s history to score multiple goals in four consecutive matches. Messi netted twice for Inter Miami in the 2-1 victory over the New England Revolution in Foxborough. With that, the club also registered its fourth straight win and remained unbeaten in its last five matches.

The Arentinian opened his account in the 27th minute of the game, thanks to New England defender Tanner Beason misjudging a header. Lionel Messi was quick to pounce as he netted one with a half-volley. He then made it 2-0 just 11 minutes later, striking one from outside the penalty area following a well-timed pass from Sergio Busquets. The opposition managed to hit back with a goal in the 80th minute, but it was the only shot that found the back of the net.

Meanwhile, Lionel Messi continues to dazzle for Inter Miami in the ongoing Major League Soccer season. He now has 14 goals to his tally, only behind Sam Surridge with 16 strikes. Messi joined Inter Miami in 2023 via free transfer and has made 64 appearances, since. He has a total of 52 goals and 25 assists.

“Our initial plan was to give him some rest tonight”- Mascherano on Messi

Lionel Messi once again played the full 90 minutes in the clash against the New England Revolution. Following the victory, Inter Miami head coach Javier Mascherano explained the decision.

"Our initial plan was to give him some rest tonight. But once New England scored, we felt the pressure and decided to keep him on. In the next few matches, we need to find the right moment to let him rest."

"We were clear that Leo would play, but we were hoping the game would give us a window to rest him. Once New England scored, we felt it was better to keep him on the pitch. Still, at some point, we need to give him a break," he said.

With Messi spending a lot of time on the pitch, concerns have grown over his workload management. He has now played full 90 minutes in nine consecutive matches for Inter Miami in the Major League Soccer and also played four games in the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup.
