"It would be nice if he played another 10 years"- David Beckham on Lionel Messi's contract extension talks
Lionel Messi continues to be an attraction in Major League Soccer, so much so that rumors of his departure are ruffling multiple feathers. After Javier Mascherano commented on a potential contract extension, Inter Miami owner David Beckham also made remarks on the subject.
Speaking to the media, Beckham mentioned that Messi’s heart lies in Miami. While Messi’s first priority may be his family, Beckham noted that his other passion is football. The former Manchester United player also stated that Messi will continue as long as he wants. Beckham added that it would be nice if Messi played for ten years. He said:
I think his [Lionel Messi] heart is in Miami now. Players these days, they look after themselves more. They're playing longer. His number one passion is obviously his family. His other passion is football. As long as he's happy, he will continue to play as long as he wants. It would be nice if he played another 10 years. I can't see it. But you never know
Furthermore, David Beckham went on to mention that he would have never dreamed of Lionel Messi playing in the United States. After his time with Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain, the eight-time Ballon d'Or winner made the move to MLS. Speaking about Messi's move and his presence at the club, Beckham described him as the best player to ever grace the game.
He said:
"I could never have dreamed to have Lionel [Messi] here. As an owner, you always say that you want the best players. Does it really happen? No. And he is the best player to have ever played the game."
Which will be the last club of Lionel Messi?
Previously, Lionel Messi had stated that his stint with Inter Miami would be his last. He specifically mentioned that he loves the game more than anything. However, he also expressed his fears about this chapter eventually coming to an end.
It's going to be my last club. I've done this all of my life; I love playing ball. I enjoy the practices and the day-to-day, the games. Yeah, there's a bit of fear that it's all ending. It's always there. It was a difficult step leaving Europe to come here [Miami]
