Is Andre Onana AS Monaco bound? Here is what you need to know
According to recent reports, despite rumors of AS Monaco’s interest, Andre Onana is “determined” to prove himself by staying at Old Trafford. The Manchester United shot-stopper wants to demonstrate his worth as he continues to struggle with the pace and demanding conditions of English football. As Manchester United look to rebuild during the ongoing summer campaign following a dismal 2024/25 season, in which the club finished 15th, they are reportedly considering parting ways with Onana in search of a more stable option between the posts.
Despite registering a save ratio of 69% in the English top flight, Onana’s judgmental errors have significantly cost the team over the past two seasons. While AS Monaco remain interested in securing the services of the Cameroonian goalkeeper, Onana is determined to fight for his place at Old Trafford. Reports suggest that unless new manager Ruben Amorim explicitly informs him he is no longer the first-choice goalkeeper, Onana intends to stay and compete for the role.
Meanwhile, Manchester United are being linked with several goalkeepers across Europe. Among them is Emiliano Martinez, who is reportedly seeking a move away from Villa Park. On the other hand, Aston Villa are currently stuck in a PSR limbo which could make Martinez to Manchester United a reality.
What did Ruben Amorim mention about Andre Onana in the previous campaign?
Andre Onana had a poor campaign in 2024/25 and he had dropped a stinker against Lyon in the first leg of the Europa League quarterfinal. Following the performance, he was dropped by Ruben Amorim. The Manchester United manager stated that the player needs to disconnect a bit in order to rediscover his form. He mentioned:
Sometimes you have to push the player to play again, sometimes you have to let him disconnect a little bit
Tomorrow he will be in training to prepare for [the second leg against Lyon] so I felt that it was a good time for André to disconnect. I think he was OK because I explained.
