It is easy to make a bold statement, but standing by it and delivering on the pitch is an entirely different task. Tottenham Hotspur’s manager, Ange Postecoglou, has done the unthinkable, guiding Spurs to a Europa League triumph against Manchester United at San Mamés. With a 1-0 victory, Tottenham secured a UEFA Champions League spot for the next campaign and ended their long wait for silverware.

The game began in a scrappy manner, with both teams struggling to establish rhythm and tempo. For the first half hour, play remained largely stagnant, with neither side able to create clear chances. There were flashes of inspiration, but nothing materialized until Brennan Johnson latched onto a cross and found the back of the net. Andre Onana and Luke Shaw failed to deal with the ball, handing Spurs the lead before halftime.

Despite tactical instability and Bruno Fernandes playing deep in midfield, Ruben Amorim chose not to introduce any substitutes to push the Portuguese forward into a more attacking role. Manchester United attempted to mount a comeback, but their efforts were hampered by frequent fouls and injuries that disrupted the flow of play. Rasmus Højlund came close to equalizing when Guglielmo Vicario failed to collect the ball cleanly, but Micky van de Ven made a heroic block to preserve the lead.

Alejandro Garnacho’s introduction with 20 minutes remaining gave United a spark, and they began to apply sustained pressure. Wave after wave of attacks came, but Tottenham’s defenders held firm. In the seven minutes of added time, United created their best chances, only for Vicario to produce two critical saves. In the dying moments, Garnacho attempted an audacious bicycle kick that hit the side-netting. With this hard-fought win, Tottenham Hotspur ended a 12-year trophy drought and lifted their first European title in over three decades, a fitting reward for Ange Postecoglou’s vision and belief.

Manchester United will look to regroup at the end of the campaign, whereas Tottenham Hotspur have allowed their fans to celebrate after a long time.
