Alexander Isak’s move from Newcastle United to Liverpool is set to be the biggest Premier League transfer, with the Reds agreeing to pay a massive £125 million for the striker. Isak was scheduled to undergo his medical on Monday before officially signing the contract. The deal surpasses the current Premier League transfer record of £115m agreement between Chelsea and Brighton for Moises Caicedo in 2023.

Meanwhile, football pundit Paul Merson remains unconvinced by Liverpool’s latest signing. Highlighting Isaak’s history with injuries, Merson said that the striker won’t be enough to play every week. With Ekitike and Gakpo already pivotal to the team’s fortune, Merson reckons integrating Isaak will be a headache for the club.

“I think only time will tell. I don’t think Isak is fit every single week; he’s not an every game sort of player. The problem is that Isak comes in and Ekitike won’t play, or he goes out to the left, and Gakpo doesn’t play. He has a lot of decisions to make, I just think why didn’t they get this sorted early doors, waiting until the last minute now, it’s ridiculous really", he said via TBR Football.

Liverpool makes perfect start to Premier League 2025-26 season

Liverpool have kick-started the 2025-26 season with three wins from as many matches.  The opening week saw The Reds secure a 4-2 win over Bournemouth.  Liverpool’s second clash proved to be a thrilling encounter with Newcastle United. A 100-minute goal from Rio Ngumoha helped Liverpool complete a dramatic 3-2 win.

Liverpool then crossed swords with the last three seasons' runners-up, Arsenal. Dominik Szoboszlai scored the only goal to help Liverpool secure a 1-0 triumph. With three wins from three games, Liverpool are comfortably sitting at the top of the Premier League table with nine points.
