Pablo Martin Paez Gavira, known as Gavi, embodies Barcelona’s footballing DNA and Spanish football. From the sun-soaked beaches of Andalusia to Camp Nou, the rise of the player shows the talent, determination, and brilliance of Spain’s rich tradition of midfield mastery, even in the modern era.

Childhood

Born on August 5, 2004, in Los Palacios y Villanfranca, a small town in the province of Andalusia, Gavi grew up in a family that loved football and continued to nurture his passion. His father, Pablo Paez was a former footballer who understood what it takes to be a footballer, whereas his mother was instrumental in providing support throughout the journey. Growing up in the rich Andalusian football culture, Gavi was surrounded by the influence of sport from birth. The region’s climate allowed for the game to happen around the year. Gavi grew up playing in local parks and beaches across age groups. The local coaches in Palacios identified his vision and competitive spirit, setting him apart from his peers.

At the age of six, Gavi joined his hometown club CF Los Palacios. He grew by leaps and bounds before Real Betis invited the eight-year-old to the trials. After clearing the trials, he was asked to join the prestigious youth academy, which helped him step up his ability. The young midfielder thrived in the conditions where he understood dictating the tempo of the game. The performances alongside his usual coaching attracted scouts from European giants.

At the start of the 2015/16 season, Barcelona decided to take a bet on the player, with them shelling €10000 to secure the services of the young midfielder to the academy. The player made a conscious decision to join the revered La Masia Academy. While it was emotionally challenging, Gavi’s development was accelerated by the coaches at the academy. His technical skills, tactical understanding, and ability to dictate the game impressed everyone at the academy.

Career

Gavi’s professional journey began with the academy, and he was immediately promoted to the U16 side of Barcelona at the start of the 2019/20 season before progressing to Barcelona U19 in the next season. His breakthrough came during the 2020/21 campaign where he featured for Barcelona B, competing in the Spanish third tier. He was established as a key player with his composure and technical ability. This was all till he has offered an improved professional contract at the start of the 2021/22 season.

His first-team debut came against Getafe as a substitute in August 2021 under Ronal Koeman when he was just seventeen. The appearance made him one of the youngest players ever to debut for Barcelona. This announced his arrival on the biggest stage of football. Under Koeman and Xavi, Gavi’s role grew exponentially. Xavi, one of the best-ever midfielders to grace the field, understood the exceptional potential that the player had. The young midfielder’s ability to press opponents, win possessions, and dictate the tempo made him a perfect candidate for tiki-taka.

The 2021/22 and 2022/23 seasons saw the player raking numbers in goal contributions before the injuries derailed his progression. He had seven goal contributions in the Spanish top flight in his first season, whereas he bagged six goal contributions in the next season. With him just being 19, the player has a big future in club football.

On the other hand, he has amassed 28 international caps for Spain with five goals in it. His first appearance for the senior national team came against Italy in the UEFA Nations League semifinals. His performances on football's biggest stage, including a memorable goal against Germany, established him as one of world football's most promising talents.

Achievements

While Gavi is young, at the age of 19, he has already bagged several individual awards, including the Kopa Trophy in 2022, alongside being the Golden Boy 2022. With his club, Barcelona, Gavi has amassed several trophies, including two La Liga (2022/23, 2024/25), one Copa del Rey (2024/25) and two Supercopa de Espana (2023 and 2025).
