FIFA World Cup: Brazil's lost World Cup dream diminishes Kochi youth's life forever
The entire world is currently gripped by the fever of the FIFA World Cup 2026, and India is no exception to this craze. Indian football fans are staying up late and waking up early to cheer for their favourite teams on TV and mobile phones. It is well known that Indian fans have a deep affection for the Brazilian football team; a prime example of this was seen during the 2022 FIFA World Cup, when Brazil was eliminated after losing the quarter-final to Croatia, leaving their fans devastated. For some die-hard fans, the pain of that defeat lingers to this day. According to a report, Brazil's quarter-final loss in the 2022 tournament proved to be a tragic, life-altering event for 26-year-old Akshay Kalappurakkal from Parakkamugal, leaving him bedridden.
Akshay was watching the Brazil vs. Croatia quarter-final match on a giant screen with his friends when Brazil lost and was knocked out of the tournament. At that very moment, he collapsed and was never able to stand on his feet again. He lost consciousness right in front of the same screen where, moments earlier, he had witnessed Brazil's defeat. He was immediately rushed to the hospital, where doctors confirmed he had developed a blood clot in his brain. Although his friends, relatives, family, and others raised significant funds for his treatment, Akshay has not yet recovered. But four years later, a sudden miracle occurred, reigniting hope among Akshay's friends and family.
It happened during the Brazil vs. Morocco match played on Sunday; Akshay's friends had gathered at his home once again. They spoke to him about the match, unsure if he could comprehend what they were saying. However, when he responded more than usual, a wave of hope and joy swept through his family and friends.
Akshay's father, K.T. Purushottaman, works as a head-load worker, and his family includes his mother, Jaya, and a younger sister. On Saturday, friends and volunteers from 'Kanivu Home Care' visited his home and, together with his mother, dressed him in a Brazil jersey. They hoped this would rekindle the passion that once gave his life a sense of purpose and perhaps revive the memories still etched in his mind.
Akshay's story has truly amazed everyone, demonstrating the depth of true fandom. Undoubtedly, the only wish his family, friends, and supporters have right now is for Brazil to win the World Cup this year—and perhaps for that moment to bring back the healthy Akshay they once knew.
