Ever since the Abu Dhabi United takeover, Manchester City have boasted an attacking prowess parallel to none. From Carlos Tevez to Sergio Agüero, Cityzens have always had an eye for clinical finishers. New to that list is Erling Haaland, a towering striker known for devastating pace and predatory instincts in front of goal. The Norwegian’s goal-scoring form and physical dominance have established him as one of the most feared strikers in world football.

Childhood

Born on July 21, 2000, to a football family in Leeds, England, Erling Haaland came into the world when his father was doning Leeds United colors. Erling Haaland’s father, Alf-Inge Håland, played a crucial role in shaping his football foundation. The sports royalty did not end with his father. Gry Marita, Erling’s mother, was a former heptathlete.

In 2004, the Haaland family decided to move to Bryne. Bryne was his parents’ hometown in Norway. This was a decision made after Alf-Inge Håland had retired early following a run of injuries. At Bryne, Erling was exposed to a set of sports, including handball, golf, and long jump. He also held a record in the standing long jump category.

At the age of five, Erling Haaland started his football career with Bryne. He steadily moved across the ranks at Bryne, where he featured for the club’s reserves. When, in 2016, Gaute Larsen was sacked as manager and Berntsen was appointed as caretaker manager, Erling Haaland made his senior team debut. While Haaland did not enjoy any returns, his performances attracted the youth systems of other clubs. TSG Hoffenheim called for the player to participate in trials which were not successful.

Career

While Erling Haaland did not have great trials with TSG Hoffenheim, Molde FK were observing from the sidelines. Molde FK shelled €100k in the winter transfer window of the 2016/17 campaign to secure the services of the youngster. This is all when the player needs to get the push to the next level in his game. Erling Haaland enjoyed his stay with Molde FK while growing up under the tutelage of Ole Gunnar Solskjær. The former Manchester United player improved the striker’s gameplay to make him one of the most promising young strikers. In two years, Haaland bagged 13 goals in the Norwegian top flight in 39 games.

RB Salzburg signed the youngster in a deal worth €8 million in the January transfer window of the 2018/19 campaign. At the Austrian club, he exploded onto the scene with his performances. While he stayed only one season with the club, he had the perfect stage to shine. He scored a hattrick on his UEFA Champions League debut. In 16 top-flight appearances for the Austrian club, he had 17 goals to his name.

His goals attracted the likes of Manchester United and Borussia Dortmund to tussle for his signature. However, the player joined the German outfit in a transfer worth €20 million. Over two and a half seasons with the German club, he scored 73 goals in 74 appearances across all competitions, cementing his reputation as one of the world's most clinical finishers. During his tenure with Borussia Dortmund, he almost helped the side win the title.

Then came Manchester City, which completely put his skill set to the fore. Signing for the club in a deal worth €60 million, he repaid every penny with his natural striker instincts. When everyone had doubts over his ability to adjust to the pace of the league, Haaland shut out his critics with fine form. He bagged 12 goals in the Champions League and 36 goals in the Premier League in his debut season. He broke several records in the English top flight. He also became the fastest to reach 50 goals in the Premier League.

While his goal-scoring numbers have rationalized in the Premier League with him bagging 27 and 22 goals respectively in the next two campaigns, he is still a feared striker. Though he struggled in the recently concluded 2024/25 season, Erling still had 25-goal contributions to his name.

At the international level, Erling Haaland represents Norway, following in his dad’s footsteps. He progressed through Norway's youth ranks by participating in the U-20 World Cups. He made his debut against Malta but had to wait until he scored a goal against Austria in the UEFA Nations League B.

Erling Haaland has been established as Norway’s primary attacking threat. He is the focal point of the side. He has 43 national caps to his name with 42 goals in his bag. Erling is the record goalscorer for the country in international competitions.

Achievements

When other strikers are setting themselves up for glory and peak form at the age of 24, Erling Haaland has a trophy cabinet that any other player can wish for. He already has two Premier League titles, one Champions League, and several other domestic trophies, including the FA Cup and Carabao Cup. The domestic trophies also include his titles with Bundesliga outfit Borussia Dortmund and Austrian outfit RB Salzburg.

Alongside the team awards, he has been a consistent performer for both the club and the country. Based on his performances for Manchester City, he was the UEFA Best Player in Europe in 2023, whereas he won the Golden Boot twice in the Premier League.
