Bayern Munich appoint Barcala as their new coach for the women's team
According to official statements released by Bayern Munich, the club has appointed Jose Barcala as the new head coach of the women's team. His appointment follows the departure of Alexander Straus, who had earlier confirmed in April that he would be leaving the German giants to take over at National Women's Soccer League club Angel City FC.
The appointment of Jose Barcala comes on the heels of a successful tenure by Alexander Straus, who delivered three titles during his time at Bayern Munich. In the current campaign, Straus led the team to the league title with an impressive eight-point margin. As a result, Barcala will face immediate pressure to maintain that level of success from day one. However, this does not imply that Barcala is underrated. The 43-year-old arrives with solid credentials, joining Bayern from Swiss first-division club Servette.
The club statement read:
José Barcala has been appointed the new head coach of FC Bayern Women. The 43-year-old Spaniard has agreed a contract until 30 June 2027 and arrives from Swiss first division club Servette.
What did Barcala have to say about his appointment?
Barcala previously served as an assistant manager with the Scottish National Team during his coaching career. Speaking about his new role, he expressed his pride and gratitude at becoming part of the German outfit. He emphasized that he is drawn to the club’s ambition and commitment to top-level performances, which align with his own goals for this new chapter. He said:
I'm proud and honoured to become part of FC Bayern Munich
The club stands for top performance and great ambitions, which makes the task even more exciting. I'm really looking forward to this new chapter and can't wait to get started
Barcala also stated that one of his primary goals is to consolidate Bayern Munich’s position at the top of the Women’s Bundesliga. Additionally, he expressed a strong desire to bring the club closer to winning the UEFA Women’s Champions League, a title that has long eluded the German side. He said:
We want to consolidate our position at the top of the women's Bundesliga in the future and also keep developing so we get closer to winning the Champions League
