It has not been a particularly great season for Manchester City fans and players. After achieving a four-peat in the Premier League, they were expected to continue their dominance in the league but have ended their campaign without a trophy. Amidst all this, their Champions League qualification is also at stake. In the midst of things, Phil Foden has opened up about his struggles at the Etihad during the ongoing campaign.

Speaking to the media, Foden mentioned that a lot has been going on for him both on and off the pitch. He has recorded only 9 goal contributions in 27 top-flight appearances this season. Reflecting on his performance, he acknowledged that life is bigger than football, but did not shy away from admitting his struggles. He said:

I’ve had a lot of things going on off the pitch mentally. It’s one of them, sometimes there’s things in life that are bigger than football. This season I’ve struggled a little bit

The soon-to-be 25-year-old mentioned that he wants to enter the next season with the right mentality and also emphasized what he can do with the ball on the pitch. He said:

Hopefully come next year I can get my head mentally right, get back where I left the season before, because I know what I’m capable of doing and the quality I have

In January, Phil Foden revealed that he returned fatigued after Euro 2024, where England once again fell short of winning the title. However, he chose not to rest and immediately rejoined the Premier League campaign. In the interview, Foden mentioned that he plans to speak with both the club and the national team regarding rest, as well as focus on recovering from his ongoing injury. Foden stated:

[Resting] is something we have to speak with the club and national team to see maybe if it’s better to rest and get my ankle fully 100% back how I want it. I just don’t know at the moment. It’s a conversation to be had and we'll see what happens.

Who will Manchester City play next?

In the final game of the Premier League campaign, Manchester City will face Fulham in a bid to seal their Champions League qualification.
