Punjab Kings' assistant coach Sunil Joshi recently confirmed that star leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal missed the side’s clash against Delhi Capitals on May 24 due to a minor injury. This match marked the first time in the ongoing IPL 2025 season that Chahal was absent from the playing XI, having featured in every game prior. His absence raised a few eyebrows among fans and analysts, especially considering his consistent performances and vital role in the team’s bowling unit. Joshi clarified that there was no major cause for concern, stating that the 34-year-old spinner was dealing with a "small niggle" and was therefore rested as a precautionary measure.

The decision to leave him out of the high-stakes encounter was made with player fitness in mind, ensuring Chahal doesn’t aggravate the issue ahead of potential playoff matches. Despite his absence, Joshi remained optimistic about Chahal’s return, hinting that the leg-spinner could be back in action soon if his recovery continues as expected. Chahal has been a key figure for Punjab Kings this season, and the team will be keen to have him fit and firing as they enter the crucial phase of the tournament. His experience and wicket-taking ability remain vital to PBKS' campaign hopes.

"Chahal has a small niggle, so we are just resting him. That's the idea," stated Punjab Kings assistant coach Sunil Joshi.

In the absence of Yuzvendra Chahal, Punjab Kings handed leg-spinner Praveen Dubey his first appearance of the season during their match against Delhi Capitals. Dubey was brought in as the Impact Player but had limited influence in the game. He bowled just two overs, conceding 20 runs while managing to dismiss Sediqullah Atal. While he picked up a wicket, his short spell didn’t quite fill the void left by Chahal, whose experience and control were visibly missed. Ultimately, PBKS suffered a six-wicket defeat, with Delhi chasing down the target with three balls to spare.

Chahal’s absence was especially notable considering his impact throughout IPL 2025 so far. The 34-year-old has taken 14 wickets in 11 innings, although he has been slightly expensive, giving away runs at an economy rate of 9.56 per over. His standout performance came on April 30 against Chennai Super Kings, where he claimed a sensational four-wicket haul, including a memorable hat-trick — the second of his IPL career. It will be interesting to see whether Yuzvendra Chahal will be available or not for the upcoming game against Mumbai Indians (MI) scheduled to take place on Monday.
